The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team came up short at home against Lockney on Friday, falling to the Longhorns, 5742.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 4-3 overall, 1-1 in district play.
The Hornets totaled 469 yards of offense, including 212 passing yards and 257 rushing yards.
Marcello King got the Hornets going in the first quarter with a one-yard rushing touchdown, but the PAT was no good, leaving the score, 6- 0. Xavier Jimenez answered with a sixyard rushing touchdown for the Longhorns and Lockney nailed the PAT to take a, 7-6, lead into quarter number two.
King would break loose for a 31-yard touchdown run to open the second frame, but the Hornets missed on the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 12-7. Lockney would answer with 21 unanswered points, before Jaibryn Ornelas caught a 62yard touchdown pass from Caleb Groetken. Groetken hit Cal Carter on the two-point conversion pass to trim the lead to, 2820, going into the locker room at halftime.
Jimenez would score the lone touchdown of the third quarter for Lockney on a one-yard run, followed by the PAT, making the score, 35-20, going into the final quarter of play.
Lockney would score again on a one-yard run to open the fourth quarter, followed by the PAT to stretch their lead to, 42-20, but Sudan would respond, as Groetken and Ornelas connected for a 75-yard touchdown pass, making the score, 42-26, after the failed two-point conversion.
Jimenez rushed for a 37-yard touchdown for Lockney, pushing their lead to, 49-26, after the PAT. But Sudan would again respond, as Ornelas rushed for a 12-yard touchdown and King ran it in for the two-point conversion cutting the lead to, 49-34.
Lockney would score again on a 17-yard touchdown run and converted the two-point conversion to make the score, 5734, but Sudan would answer with a two-yard touchdown run by Groetken. He would hit Carter with a pass on the two-point conversion to cut the lead to, 5742, as Lockney took the district contest over Sudan.
Offensively, Groetken finished the game 8-16 passing for 212 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 20 carries for 137 yards and one touchdown on the ground.
In the rushing game, King added 15 carries for 117 yards and two touchdowns, while Ornelas tallied two carries for 14 yards and one touchdown.
In the receiving game, Ornelas hauled in two catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns, while Aspen Reyher tallied two catches for 25 yards and King added one catch for 21 yards. Cal Carter tallied two catches for 16 yards and Kincaid Boehning finished with one catch for 13 yards.
Defensively, Zach Montes led the Hornets with 15 total tackles, while Michael Williams chipped in 11 tackles, including one for loss, and Boehning contributed 10 tackles. King, Reyher and Angel Martinez each tallied nine tackles, while Kasen Kauffman contributed five tackles, including two for loss. The Hornets also recorded a fumble recovery.
The Hornets will be on the road Friday to take on the Hale Center Owls.
Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
