The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team topped the Vega Longhorns on Friday night, 41-20, to capture their Homecoming victory.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 2-2 overall on the season.
The Longhorns jumped out to a, 14-0, lead in the first quarter, after quarterback, Kase Vogler connected with Cruce Cook on a 20-yard pass and Daniel Adams on a 14-yard pass. Both PAT’s were good. Sudan, though, would respond, as Jaibryn Ornelas rushed for a 25-yard touchdown run and the PAT from Caleb Groetken was good, making the score, 14-7, as the opening quarter came to a close.
Sudan took over in the second quarter, opening things up, as Groetken connected with Ornelas on a 53-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good, tying the game, 14-14. Groetken and Ornelas would hook up again later in the quarter, for a 57-yard touchdown strike, followed by the PAT, putting the Hornets in front. 21-14.
Later in the second quarter, Cal Carter would find Ornelas for a 58- yard touchdown pass, followed by the PAT from Groetken, making the score, 28-14. Groetken would hit Kincaid Boehning for a five-yard touchdown pass, but the PAT was no good, as Sudan closed out the first half with 34 unanswered points.
Vogler would hit Omar Segovia on an eight-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, but the PAT was no good, trimming the lead to, 34-20, heading into the fourth quarter
In the final quarter, Groetken and Ornelas would hook up one more time, this time for a 41-yard touchdown pass followed by the PAT, as Sudan went on to defeat Vega, 41-20
Groetken finished the game 9-17 passing for 216 yards and four touchdowns, while Carter was 1-1 for 58 yards and a score.
In the rushing game, Groetken led the way with 11 carries for 82 yards, while Angel Martinez tallied 16 carries for 62 yards and Ornelas added one rush for 25 yards and a touchdown.
Carter also had one carry for 13 yards.
In the receiving game, Ornelas led the way with five catches for 218 yards and four touchdowns, while carter hauled in three catches for 29 yards and Aspen Reyher contributed one catch for 22 yards. Boehning finished with one catch for five yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, the Hornets were led by Kasen Kauffman, who finished with 14 total tackles, two for loss. Zach Montes tallied 13 total tackles, while Boehning added 12 tackles, three for loss and Javier Avila finished with 11 tackles, one for loss. Reyher finished with four tackles, one for loss, and he had one interception, while Max Lopez tallied four tackles and a fumble recovery
The Hornets will be at Plains to take on the Cowboys on Friday to close out the pre-district schedule.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
