Hornets take down New 38-20

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team closed out the regular season on Friday with a, 38-20, victory over the New Home Leopards.

With the win, the Hornets finish the regular season with a mark of 5-5 overall, 2-2 in district play.

The Hornets totaled 489 yards of total offense including 169 passing yards and 320 rushing yards.

In the first quarter, senior quarterback, Bode Box, got the Hornets off and running with an 11-yard touchdown pass to senior running back, Rustin Penrod. The PAT by Abram Rodriguez was no good, making the score, 6-0. New Home would answer, as Bode Stewart hit Spencer Keys with a 36-yard touchdown pass. The PAT by Kadence Power was good, putting the Leopards out in front, 7-6.

Box answered to begin the second quarter, as he rushed for a five-yard touchdown. The twopoint conversion try was no good, as the Hornets regained the lead, 12-7. New Home responded later in the second quarter, as Cameron Jones rushed for a 37-yard touchdown. The PAT by Powers was good, putting the Leopards back in front, 14-12.

Box would answer again for Sudan with a 39-yard touchdown pass to put Sudan back in front, 18-14. The Hornets would close out the first half with a 23-yard touchdown run by Penrod, making the score, 25-14, going into the locker room by halftime.

Sudan would rush for a 21-yard score for the lone points of the third quarter, but New Home would strike back to begin the fourth quarter, as Jones rushed for a 65-yard touchdown trimming the lead to, 31-20. Box would answer the call once more for Sudan with a 50-yard rushing touchdown to close out the game. The PAT by Rodriguez was good, making the score, 38-20.

Sudan will take part in the Class 2A Bi-district round of the playoffs beginning next week with game info and opponent TBA.
