The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team blasted the Lockney Longhorns on Friday, 56-6.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 6-1 overall, 2-0 in district play.
The Hornets totaled 369 yards of offense, including 250 rushing yards and 119 passing yards.
Cal Carter opened the scoring in the first quarter, with an 85-yard kick-off return touchdown that was followed by the PAT from Caleb Groetken, making the score, 7-0. Later in the first quarter, Kyler Edwards followed it up with a seven-yard rushing touchdown and Groetken rushed for the twopoint conversion to make the score, 15-0.
Later in the quarter, Haden Provence intercepted a pass and took it 95 yards to the house for the pick-six. Carter rushed for the two-point conversion to stretch their lead to, 23-0, as the first quarter came to a close.
Kyler Edwards got the second quarter going with a four-yard rushing touchdown, that was followed by the PAT from Groetken, extending their lead to, 30-0. Lockney would get on the board with a 15-yard touchdown through the air, but they missed on the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 306.
Brian Delgado would close out the first half with an eightyard rushing touchdown, followed by the PAT from Groetken, pushing their lead to, 37-6, going into the locker room at halftime.
In the third quarter, Aspen Reyher intercepted a pass and took it 68 yards to the house for the Hornet’s second pick-six of the night. The Pat from Groetken sailed through the uprights making the score, 44-6. later in the third quarter, Halen Ruiz would score on a six-yard touchdown run, but the PAT from Groetken was no good, leaving the score, 50-6.
Delgado would score on a 16-yard run to close out the third quarter, as the Hornets took down Lockney, 56-6.
Offensively, Groetken finished the game, 5-8 passing for 86 yards and two interceptions, while Delgado was 1-1 for 33 yards.
The rushing attack was led by Delgado, who tallied 10 carries for 93 yards and two scores. Edwards chipped in 13 carries for 75 yards and two scores, while Ruiz added four carries for 16 yards and a touchdown. Groetken also contributed eight carries for 53 yards.
In the receiving game, Reyher hauled in three catches for 85 yards, while Aybran Granados tallied one catch for 20 yards and Kincaid Boehning added one catch for 10 yards.
Defensively, Granados led the team with 12 total tackles and a fumble recovery, while Javier Avila chipped in 10 tackles, including one for loss, one interception and one fumble recovery, and Boehning added eight tackles. Andrew Larson chipped in seven tackles, including three for loss, while Max Lopez added seven tackles, including two for loss and a sack.
Reyher tallied three tackles, including for loss and an interception return for a touchdown, while Haden Provence added five tackles and an interception return for a touchdown.
The Hornets will clash with Hale Center on Friday in a battle of unbeatens in district play.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
