Hornets sting Crosbyton, 48-8, in district-opener

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team got District play started on the right foot on Friday, taking down Crosbyton, 488.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 4-2 overall, 1-0 in district play.

The Hornets totaled 543 yards, including 289 passing yards and 254 rushing yards.

Jaibryn Ornelas got the Hornets going in the first quarter, as Caleb Groetken connected with Ornelas for a 61-yard touchdown pass. The PAT from Groetken was good, putting the Hornets in front 7-0. later in the frame, Groetken would call his own number, punching in a seven-yard touchdown run, but his PAT was no good, leaving the score, 13-0, going in to the second quarter.

Ornelas caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from Groetken to open the second frame, but the Hornets missed on the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 19-0. Later in the second quarter, Ornelas would catch a 31-yard touchdown pass from Groetken, followed by the PAT to stretch their lead to, 26-0.

Marcello King closed out the first half for the Hornets with a 33yard touchdown run, followed by Groetken’s PAT, making the score, 33-0, going into the locker room at halftime.

Groetken opened the second half with a 34-yard field goal to push their lead to, 36-0, and later in the third quarter, Aspen Reyher caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Groetken. The PAT was no good, leaving the score, 42-0, going into the fourth quarter.

Crosbyton would score on a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, but they failed on the two-point conversion, making the score, 42-8. Sudan would respond, as Cal Carter broke loose on a 32-yard touchdown run to close out the game, as Sudan took down Crosbyton, 48-8.

Offensively, Groetken finished the game 10-18 passing for 279 yards and four touchdowns, while adding six carries for 59 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

The rushing attack was led by King, who tallied 15 carries for 122 yards and one touchdown, while Carter added seven carries for 49 yards and one touchdown. Kasen Kauffman chipped in six carries for 18 yards.

In the receiving game, Ornelas hauled in five catches for 194 yards and three touchdowns, while Aspen Reyher contributed four catches for 86 yards and a score.

Defensively, Kauffman led the team in tackles with 17, including two for loss and a sack. Zach Montes tallied 14 tackles, while Aybran Granados finished with 13 tackles and a fumble recovery. Michael Williams totaled 12 tackles, including four for loss, while Javier Avila finished with nine tackles, including one for loss and a sack.

The Hornets will host Lockney on Friday as District play continues.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
