Hornets sting Bulldogs, 77-34

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity basketball team went on the road and took down the Amherst Bulldogs on Tuesday, 77-34.

Sudan was assessed a pre-game tech, putting Kevin Garcia on the free-throw line for two shots. He sank both attempts for Amherst, putting them in front, 2-0, prior to the tip-off.

Rafael Bueno knocked down a jumper from the left elbow off of the assist from Oscar Contreras to open the game, but Sudan answered with a three from the right wing by Christian Delgado to cut the Amherst lead to, 4-3, with 7:22 to play in the opening quarter. Jaibryn Ornelas drained a three from the right wing to put Sudan in front, 6-4, and with 6:33 to play in the first quarter, Brian Delgado was fouled on a fast-break attempt, earning a trip to the line. He converted one-of-two shots from the line, making the score, 7-4.

Ornelas dropped in a floater from the right side and on their next possession, Aspen Reyher dropped in a put-back off of a block by Garcia to stretch their lead to, 11-4. Reyher drove the lane for a lay-up to keep the run going for the Hornets and Ornelas banked in a three from the left elbow in transition, before dropping in a floater in the lane off of an Amherst turnover to push their lead to, 184, with 2:32 remaining in the quarter.

Oscar Contreras knocked down a jumper from the left corner to end the scoring drought for Amherst, but Sudan answered, as Jacob Baker knocked down a long jumper from the left wing off of the assist from Reyher, making the score, 206, as Sudan took a time out with 1:51 remaining in the quarter.

Out of the break, Guillermo Pacheco dropped in a lay-up for Amherst, but Brian Delgado responded with a lay-up on the other end for Sudan, stretching the lead to, 22-8. Garcia would drop in a put-back off of a miss by Aiden Rodriguez, but Reyher dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Ornelas on the other end, making the score, 24-10. Garcia would close out the quarter with a lay-up for Amherst, making the score, 24-12, going into quarter number two.

Ornelas opened the second frame with a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Brian Delgado, but on the other end, Garcia dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Rodriguez, making the score, 27-14. Ornelas dropped in a lay-up in transition off of a long pass from Reyher and Christian Delgado followed it up with a layup off of a steal, making the score, 31-14, with 6:13 to play in the half.

Ornelas scored on a thirdchance lay-up for Sudan, but Garcia again answered with a layup on the other end, trimming the lead to, 33-16. Marcello King dropped in a floater from the left side, but Garcia answered with a lay-up off of an assist from Bueno, making the score, 35-18, with just over five minutes to play in the half.

Amherst took a time out with 4:42 left to play in the half, and out of the break, Ornelas knocked down back-to-back threes for Sudan, pushing their lead to, 4118. Angel Contreras dropped in a lay-up off of a turnover by Sudan and on the next play, Garcia was fouled on a put-back attempt by Slade Nichols, earning a trip to the line. He split the attempts at the line, cutting the lead to, 41-21.

Sudan took a time out with 2:50 to play in the half, and out of the break, Ornelas knocked down a short jumper from the left wing off of a long pass from King to push their lead back out to, 43-21. Reyher was fouled on an attempt by Angel Contreras with just over two minutes remaining in the half. He converted both free throws to make the score, 45-21. With time winding down in the half, Reyher used a euro-step to get into the paint for a lay-up, making the score, 47-21, going into the locker room at halftime.

Christian Delgado opened the second half with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Ornelas and with seven minutes remaining in the third, Reyher dropped in a lay-up, stretching their lead to, 52-21.

Rodriguez drove the lane, dumping the ball off to Garcia for a layup, but Ornelas answered with a three from the right elbow, sparking a run for the Hornets. Brian Delgado dropped in a lay-up in transition for Sudan and Christian Delgado followed it up with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Ornelas, making the score, 60-23, with 5:46 to play in the quarter.

With 4:45 to play in the third, Christian Delgado hit Ornelas with an outlet pass on the fast-break for a lay-up and Ornelas followed it up with a drive and dump to Brian Delgado for a lay-up, stretching their lead to, 64-23. Bueno dropped in a lay-up off of a steal to stop the bleeding for Amherst, and he followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Oscar Contreras, making the score, 64-27.

Garcia would drop in a lay-up for Amherst, but with time winding down in the quarter, King knocked down a floater in the lane off of the assist by Aaron Moore, making the score, 66-29, going into the final quarter of play.

Ornelas opened the fourth quarter with a put-back off of a miss by Reyher and he followed it up with a three from the right wing, off of the assist from Brian Delgado, extending their lead to, 71-29. With 4:35 remaining in the game, King grabbed an offensive rebound and knocked down a short jumper in the lane for Sudan and Reyher followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by King in transition, pushing their lead to, 75-29.

Rodriguez dropped in a floater from the right wing for Amherst and on their next possession, he was fouled on an attempt, earning at trip to the line. He split the free throws, making the score, 75-32, with under three minutes to play in the contest. Rodriguez would score a fast-break lay-up off of a steal, but Reyher would answer with a lay-up, as Sudan went on to take the contest, 77-34.

Sudan was led by Ornelas, who led the team with a game-high 34 points, to go along with six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Reyher tallied 16 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Christian Delgado chipped in 11 points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists, and King contributed six points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Brian Delgado chipped in five points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Baker finished with five points and two rebounds.

Kevin Garcia led the Bulldogs with 17 points, while Bueno tallied six points and Rodriguez chipped in five points. Pacheco, Angel Contreras and Oscar Contreras each finished with two points in the contest.
