Hornets shutout mustangs, 6-0

The Sudan Hornet’s varsity baseball team shutout the Olton Mustangs on Tuesday, 8-0, behind a complete game from sophomore pitcher, Cal Carter.

Carter threw seven innings on the mound, giving up two hits, while striking out eight batters.

For the Mustangs, Dax Light pitched 0.2 innings, giving up one hit, while Victor Reyes pitched one inning, giving up two hits, one walk, and one run, while striking out two batters. Jett Tomsu pitched 4.1 innings giving up two hits, four walks and four runs, two earned, while striking out seven batters.

It was a pitcher’s duel early on, as Cal Carter got Paytn Jimenez to strike out swinging for out number one in the top of the first inning. Jaxon Tomsu popped up to Marcello King at second base for out number two and Callen Burns grounded out to King at second base to retire the side.

In the home-half of the first inning, Carter popped up to Jimenez at shortstop for out number one and Jaibryn Ornelas struck out swinging for out number two. Jett Tomsu got Caleb Groetken to strike out looking to end the inning.

In the top of the second inning, Carter got Alan Vasquez to strike out swinging for out number one, but Fabian Gutierrez was hit by a pitch to give the Mustangs their first base runner of the day. However, it was short-lived, as Light popped up to Julian Salas at first base, who doubled up Gutierrez at first to retire the side.

Sudan was unable to get anything going in the bottom half of the inning, as Dylan Provence struck out looking and Salas struck out swinging. King drew a walk and stole second on a pitch, before Kincaid Boehning struck out swinging to end the inning.

In the top of the third, Jett Tomsu was hit by a pitch to lead things off, but he would get picked off at second base trying to steal for out number one. Reyes was also hit by a pitch and Wyatt Francis singled up the middle to put two runners on for the Mustangs. Jimenez would ground out to Aybran Granados at third base and Jaxon Tomsu struck out swinging to retire the side.

In the bottom of the third, after a lead-off strikeout by Granados, Haden Provence and Carter drew back-to-back walks to give Sudan a pair of base runners, however, Ornelas would fly out to Vasquez in left field for out number two and Groetken flew out to Francis in right field to end the inning, as they stranded two on base.

Burns opened the fourth inning with a ground out to King at second base for out number one, but Vasquez picked him up with a single to left field. Vasquez stole second on a passed ball, but Gutierrez flew out to Ornelas in left field for out number two. Vasquez would get picked off at third by Carter to retire the side.

In the home-half of the fourth inning, Dylan Provence popped up to Gutierrez at second base for out number one, but Salas ripped a double to left field to put a runner in scoring position for the Hornets. King flew out to Francis in right field, as Salas tagged up and took third on the play and Boehning was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners for Sudan.

Granados hit a fly ball to center field and reached on an error by Burns, as Salas and Boehning scored, making the score, 2-0, with a runner on second. Carter, though, would strike out looking to end the rally.

Carter got the Mustangs to go three-up-and-three-down in the top of the fifth inning, as Light, Jett Tomsu and Reyes all went down swinging to retire the side.

Ornelas opened the bottom of the fifth with a single to left field, but Groetken flew out to Burns in center field for out number one. Dylan Provence and Salas were hit by back-to-back pitches to load the bases for Sudan. Reyes relieved Jett Tomsu on the mound, as he got King to strike out looking for out number two.

Boehning singled on a line drive to right field, as Ornelas and Angel Martinez both scored and Salas ended up on third making the score, 4-0, with runners on the corners. Granados reached base on a dropped third strike that got by Jaxon Tomsu behind the plate, loading the bases again for Sudan, but Haden Provence lined out to Jimenez at shortstop to end the inning.

Carter retired the Mustangs in order in the top of the sixth inning, as Francis popped up to Carter on the mound, Jimenez grounded out to King at second base and Jaxon Tomsu struck out swinging to retire the side.

In the bottom half of the inning, Carter reached on an error by Jimenez at shortstop to lead things off, but Ornelas popped up to Gutierrez at second base for out number one. Groetken singled to right field, moving Carter over to third to put runners on the corners for the Hornets.

Dylan Provence was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Salas drew a walk to bring in a run and make the score, 5-0. King hit a pop fly to left field that fell in for an RBI-single to make the score, 6-0. nit Martinez was picked off at third base for out number two and Boehning grounded into a fielder’s choice to Gutierrez at second base to end the inning.

Sudan kept the Mustangs off the board in the top of the seventh inning to take the contest, 60.

The teams played game two of their season series on Saturday. Results were not avaialable at press time. The Hornets will continue their season on Monday with a home game against New Deal. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Olton will continue their season on Monday with a road game against Hale Center. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
