The Sudan Hornets took down the Olton Mustangs on Tuesday in their first meeting of the season, 12-2.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 2-4 in district play, while the Mustangs fall to 2-4 in district play.
Haden Provence pitched four innings for the Hornets, giving up four hits, one walk and one earned run, while striking out five batters. Isaiah Montoya pitched one inning, giving up one hit and one earned run, while earning two strike outs.
For the Mustangs, Dax Light pitched 3.2 innings, giving up five hits, one walk and five runs, two earned, while earning three strike outs. Jett Tomsu pitched 0.1 innings, giving up one hit, one walk and one earned run, while striking out one batter. Alex Green pitched 0.1 innings, giving up three hits, one walk and six unearned runs.
Sudan’s defense blanked the Mustangs in the first inning, before adding two runs in the home-half of the first to make the score, 2-0. Olton would scratch a run across in the top of the second to cut the lead in half, 2-1, going into the third inning.
Both teams went scoreless in the third, and in the bottom of the fourth, Sudan tacked on four more runs to stretch their lead to, 6-1. Olton pushed a run across in the top of the fifth to trim the lead to, 6-2, but Sudan would walk it off in the bottom of the fifth with six runs to take the contest, 12-2, in five innings.
At the plate, the Hornets tallied 13 hits and three walks as a team, led by Caleb Groetken, who had a triple, two doubles, one walk and two RBI’s. Kyler Edwards had a triple, while Miles Ledbetter tallied a double and an RBI.
Jason Bohler added two hits and three RBI’s, while Kaine Carroll chipped in two hits and two RBI’s, and Montoya contributed one hit, one walk and one RBI. Dylan Provence added one hit and one RBI, while Ryan Willoughby tallied one hit, one walk and one RBI, and Haden Provence finished with one hit in the contest.
For the Mustangs, they totaled five hits and one walk as a team, led by Callen Burns, who finished with a double. Light had one hit and one RBI, while Cesar Ceballos had a hit and a walk and Rigo Galvan tallied an RBI. Wyatt Francis finished with two hits in the contest.
The Hornets were at Olton on Friday for their second meeting with the Mustangs. Results were not available at press time. The Hornets will continue their season on Tuesday with a road game against New Deal, while the Mustangs will be at home for their first game against the Hale Center Owls.
First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. for the Hornets and 4 p.m. for the Mustangs.
