The Sudan Hornets’ varsity basketball team opened their season at the Plains Tournament this past weekend, where they finished 1-2.
In their tournament-opener on Thursday against Friona, the Hornets took down the Chieftains, 67--44.
Sudan poured in 20 points to open the game in the first quarter and added 18 in the second frame, taking a, 38-18, lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Hornets outscored Friona, 13-10, in the third quarter and both teams tallied 16 points in the final frame, as Sudan took the contest, 67-44.
Jaibryn Ornelas led the team with 36 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals, while Aspen Reyher joined him in double-figures scoring with 24 points, nine rebounds, four steals, two blocks and one assist, and Brian Delgado tallied four points, five steals, four rebounds and three assists. Kye Polk added two points and four rebounds, while Jacob Baker finished with one point, three steals and two rebounds.
On Friday, the Hornets dropped a close contest to ASESH, 48-38.
Sudan netted 16 points in the opening quarter, taking a onepoint lead, 16-15, into quarter number two. Both teams tallied eight points in the second frame, as the Hornets took a, 24-23, lead into the locker room at halftime.
ASESH, would pour in 18 points in the third quarter, to take the lead, 41-30, going into the final quarter of play. Sudan would outscore ASESH, 8-7, in the final quarter, but it was not enough for the comeback, as they fell, 48-38.
Ornelas led the team with 24 points, seven rebounds, four assists and one steal, while Brian Delgado tallied five points, two rebounds and two steals, and Baker chipped in four points, one steal and one block. Reyher contributed three points, two assists, two steals and one rebound, and Polk finished with two points, three blocks, two steals and one rebound.
The Hornets wrapped up tournament plain at Plains on Saturday, falling to the host team Cowboys, 78-39.
Plains had a big first half, outscoring the Hornets, 23-11, in the first quarter, and, 28-6, in the second quarter to take a, 51-17, lead into the locker room at halftime.
Sudan poured in 12 points in the third quarter and 10 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t overcome the first-half deficit, as they fell to the Cowboys, 78-39.
Ornelas led the Hornets with 24 points, four steals, one rebound and one assist, while Reyher tallied six points, nine rebounds, one steal and one block, and Christian Delgado contributed three points and three rebounds.
Brian Delgado tallied two points, one rebound and one steal, while Polk chipped in two points, two steals and one rebound, and Baker finished with two points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal.
The Hornets will be back in action on Dec. 3rd when they host the Ropes Eagles.
Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
