Hornets fall to Tulia, 14-3

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity baseball team fell to the Tulia Hornets on Monday, Feb. 24th, 14-3.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 3-2 overall on the year.

Caleb Groetken got the Hornets on base in the top of the first inning with a lead-off single and he stole second, before Dylan Provence laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by the first baseman, Gustavio Trevino, who got the out at first, as Groetken advanced to third on the play with one out.

Cal Carter kept it going with an RBI-single up the middle to put Sudan in front, 1-0, and Jaibryn Ornelas followed it up with a single to David Molina at shortstop, putting runners on first and second for Sudan. Carter would get picked off at second for out number two, but Ornelas would steal second, before Julian Salas drew a walk. Marcello King, though, would strike out swinging to retire the side.

In the home-half of the first, Jarvis Pastrana led things off with a triple to right field and Gustavio Trevino was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners for Tulia. Molina drove in a run with a single to left field, leaving runners on first and second with the score tied, 11, and Zach Trevino drew a walk to load the bases for Tulia and Roberto Martinez walked to bring in a run and put Tulia on top, 2-1.

J’Ven Lieja reached on an error by Carter on the mound to score a run and put runners on second and third, making the score, 3-1. Carter got Corbyn Goss to strike out swinging for out number one, but Xavier Ortiz singled on a grounder to Dylan Provence at third base to bring in another run, pushing their lead to, 4-1. Martinez would get picked off at third for out number two and Jacob Trevino struck out swinging to end the inning.

In the top of the second inning, Aybran Granados drew a lead off walk, before Haden Provence flew out to Ortiz for out number one. Ledbetter reached on a catchers interference call and Groetken followed it up with an RBI-single through the right side, leaving runners on the corners with the lead cut to, 4-2.

Dylan Provence grounded out to Abeyta at second base for out number two, as Ledbetter scored to make it a one-run game, 4-3. Carter would be called out on a caught foul tip third strike to retire the side.

In the bottom of the second, Pastrana grounded out to Haden Provence at shortstop for out number one, but Gustavio Trevino and Molina were both hit by a pitch to put two runners on for Tulia. Zach Trevino singled up the middle to load the bases for Tulia and during the next at bat, Gustavio Trevino would steal home, before Molin was picked off at second for out number two, making the score, 5-3. Carter would get Martinez to strike out looking to end the inning.

Sudan would go three-up-andthree- down in the top of the third inning, before Tulia busted the game wide open in the bottom half, scoring five runs to stretch their lead to, 10-3. Tulia would add four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score, 14-3, before blanking Sudan in the top of he fifth to take the run-rule victory.

Carter pitched two innings, giving up four hits, two walks and five runs, four earned, while striking out three. Kyler Edwards pitched two innings, giving up seven hits and nine runs, while earning one strikeout.

The Hornets were back in action this weekend at the Ralls Tournament. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Monday, March 3rd with a home game against Springlake-Earth.

First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
