Hornets fall to tahoka in game 2 on Friday, 15-5

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity baseball team saw their season come to an end in the Class 2ADII Bi-district round of the baseball play-offs on Friday, as they fell in game two to Tahoka, 15-5.

With the loss, the Hornets in their season with a mark of 14-10 overall.

Caleb Groetken started on the mound for the Hornets, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up three hits, eight walks and 12 runs, four earned, while earning four strike outs. Haden Provence pitched one inning, giving up three hits, three walks and three runs, two earned, while striking out one batter.

In the top of the first inning, Cal Carter grounded out to Martin Vera-Carlton at first base for out number one. Jaibryn Ornelas grounded out to Dante Garcia at shortstop for out number two, but Groetken singled on a line drive to left field to give the Hornets their first base runner of the day.

Groetken took second on a passed ball, before Dylan Provence was hit by a pitch to make it a pair of base runners for Sudan. Julian Salas drew a walk to load the bases for the Hornets and Marcello King singled on an error by Garcia at shortstop, as Groetken scored to put Sudan in front, 1-0. Kincaid Boehning would strike out swinging to retire the side.

Tahoka would load the bases in the bottom half of the first, but they could not manufacture a run, as Groetken got Bek McCleskey to strike out swinging to end the inning.

The score would stand until the bottom of the third inning, when Jordan Hicks drew a lead-off walk for Tahoka and Brogan Stone was hit by a pitch. Garcia walked to load the bases for the Bulldogs and Sam Kessler followed it up with a two-RBI-double to left field, putting Tahoka in front, 2-1.

Cayden Gutierrez grounded out to Groetken on the mound, who got the out at first for out number one. Garcia would scored on a passed ball and Kessler woulds core on an error by Groetken to push their lead to, 4-1, before McCleskey drew a walk for Tahoka. Hurley Liendo hit a grounder to second base and reached on an error by King. The runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch by Groetken and McCleskey would scored on a passed ball to make the score, 51, as Liendo advaned to third on the play. Vera-Carlton singled on a fly ball to left field, driving in the run from third to make the score, 6-1.

Oscar Rendon grounded out to King at second base, as Vera-Carlton advanced to third on the play and Hicks and Stone drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Tahoka. Vera-Carlton scored on a passed ball, as the runners advanced to second and third, pushing their lead to, 7-1. Garcia hit an RBI-single to right field and Stone scored on an error by Dylan Provence, extending their lead to, 9-1. Kessler would fly out to Boehning in right field to end the inning.

Tahoka added three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score, 12-1, and in the top of the fifth, Ornelas drew a leadoff walk, before Groetken flew out to Hicks in left field for out number one. Kooper Edwards drew a walk, but Salas struck out swinging for out number two. King was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Boehning followed it up with a two-RBI double to left field, leaving runners on second and third, as they trimmed the lead to, 12-3.

Aybran Granados drew a walk to reload the bases for Sudan and King scored on a passed ball to cut the lead to, 12-4, before Haden Provence walked to reload the bases for the Hornets. Boehning scored on a passed ball, before Carter grounded out to Vera-Carlton at first base to end the inning with the score, 12-5.

Tahoka would walk it off in the fifth inning, as they pushed three runs across to take the contest, 15-5.
