The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team saw their season come to an end on Friday, as they fell to the Farwell Steers in Dimmitt, 56-42, in the Class 2A Bi-district round of the playoffs.
With the loss, the Hornets finish the season with a mark of 8-3 overall.
The Hornets totaled 602 yards of offense, including 320 passing yards and 282 rushing yards.
Farwell got the game going in the first quarter with a 36yard touchdown pass from KolsonAllen, but the PAT was no good, leaving the score, 60. Sudan responded, as Caleb Groetken punched in a threeyard run and drilled the PAT to put the Hornets in front, 7-6.
Allen would answer later in the quarter with a 61-yard touchdown run, followed by the PAT to make the score, 13-7. Sudan, though, would not go away, as Groetken connected with Kincaid Boehning for a 12-yard touchdown pass. The PAT by Groetken was good, putting Sudan back in front, 1413, heading into quarter number two.
Groetken would open the second frame with a one-yard touchdown run, but Farwell would answer with 22 unanswered points, closing out the first half with a 54-yard touchdown pass, asAllen connected with Andrae Pullen for the score. The Steers converted the two-point conversion to make the score, 35-21, going into the locker room at halftime.
Sudan would open the scoring in the second half, as Groetken again connected with Boehning for a 12-yard touchdown pass, followed by the PAT to cut the lead to, 35-28. Farwell, though, would respond with a 29-yard touchdown run and the PAT to make the score, 42-28, heading into the final quarter of play.
In the fourth quarter, Allen would connect with Pullen for a 68-yard touchdown pass, stretching the lead to, 49-28. Allen would follow it up with a 16-yard touchdown pass to push the lead out to, 56-28. Sudan would not lay down, as Haden Provence scored on a one-yard touchdown run, but the Hornets missed on the twopoint conversion, leaving the score, 56-34.
Brian Delgado would score on a 13-yard touchdown run and Kyle Edwards followed it up with the two-point conversion, as the Hornets fell short against the Steers, 56-42.
Offensively, Groetken finished the game, 21-35 passing for 320 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also added 22 carries for 110 yards and two touchdowns.
In the rushing attack, Kyler Edwards led the way with 17 carries for 145 yards, while Delgado chipped in four carries for 16 yards and a touchdown and Haden Provence added two carries for 11 yards and a score.
In the receiving game, Aspen Reyher led the way with five catches for 104 yards, while Kooper Edwards chipped in five catches for 98 yards and Cal Carter contributed nine catches for 94 yards. Boehning finished with two catches for 24 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, JavierAvila led the team in tackles with 12, whileAndrew Larson finished with 11 tackles, including one for loss. Delgado tallied eight tackles, while Gabe Lopez finished with six tackles, including one for loss and Dylan Provence finished with four tackles, including two for loss. The Hornets also had a fumble recovery.
