The Sudan Hornets’ varsity basketball team fell at home to the Ropes Eagles on Tuesday, 57-30.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 06 overall on the year.
Sal Juarez opened the game with a floater from the left side and Ryan Huddleston followed it up with a jumper from the right wing, off of the assist from Juarez to put the Hornets in front, 4-0. With 6:35 remaining in the opening quarter, Landon Nale was fouled on an attempt by Juarez earning a trip to the line. He made one-oftwo shots at the line to make the score, 4-1.
Jon Conley knocked down a jumper from the left side off of the assist from Trent Wilson, but Nale answered with a jumper from the right wing, and Braxxin Partington dropped in a putback off of his own miss to cut the lead to, 6-5, with 5:34 remaining in the first quarter.
Ropes closed out the first quarter on a, 12-0, scoring run, taking a, 17-6, lead into quarter number two.
Ropes’ run extended into the second quarter, before Tony Vargas buried a three from the top of the key to trim the lead to, 24-9, with just over five minutes to play in the first half. Nate Brooks picked up a steal and got it ahead to Garrett Gilliam for a lay-up in transition and Nale followed it up with a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Wilson, who picked up his third foul of the game. The free throw was good from Nale, stretching the lead to, 29-9, as Sudan took a time out to talk things over.
Out of the break, Juarez knocked down a runner from the left side, but Pake Partington buried a three from the left elbow and followed it up with a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on the play. He converted the free throw to stretch the Eagles’ lead to, 35-11, going into the locker room at halftime.
Ropes opened the third quarter on a, 6-0, scoring run, before Wilson knocked down a runner from the left side, making the score, 42-13, with 4:54 to play in the quarter. On their next possession, Wilson was fouled on an attempt by Nale. He converted oneof- two shots at the line to make the score, 42-14.
The Eagles though, would go on a, 10-0, run to end the quarter, as Brooks buried a three and dropped in a layup and Pake Parkington drained a three and Brady Bryan dropped in a lay-up to make the score, 52-14, going into the final quarter of play.
Vargas dropped in a floater from the right side off of the assist from Huddleston and Juarez followed it up with a reverse lay-up, trimming the lead to, 52-18, with 4:26 remaining in the game. Braxton Garrett knocked down a short jumper from the right side and Pake Parkington buried a three from the right wing to extend their lead to, 57-18, with 3:38 remaining in the game.
Juarez was fouled on an attempt by Jaden Clabaugh with 2:15 to play. He converted both free throws and followed it up with a floater in the lane to cut the lead to, 57-22. Vargas kept the run going for Sudan with a three from the right elbow and Huddleston drained a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Conley, making the score, 57-28. With time winding down in the game, Wilson knocked down a turnaround jumper from the right wing, as Sudan fell to the Eagles, 57-30.
The Hornets were led in scoring by Juarez, who finished with 10 points, while Vargas added eight points and Wilson and Huddleston each tallied five points.
The Hornets were at the Plains Tournament this weekend. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a home game against O’Donnell.
