Hornets drop season series with Hale Center

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity baseball team fell on the road to Hale Center on Saturday, 12-2, dropping the season series with the Owls.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 1-2 in district play.

Caleb Groetken pitched 1.1 innings, giving up two hits, nine walks and seven runs, six earned, while striking out two batters. Isaiah Montoya pitched 2.2 innings, giving up three hits, two walks and five runs, one earned, while striking out two batters.

Hale Center plated six runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Sudan answered with a run in the top of the second to trim the lead to, 6-1. The Owls would also add a run in the bottom half of the second to push their lead back out to, 7-1. Sudan would add another run in the top of the third, but Hale Center would tack on three runs in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth to take the run-rule victory over Sudan in five innings, 12-2.

At the plate, the Hornets totaled five hits and one walk, led Groetken, who tallied a double and an RBI. Haden Provence chipped in a triple, while Dylan Provence and Kaine Carroll each recorded a hit and Jason Bohler added a hit and an RBI. Ryan Willoughby had the lone walk of the day for the Hornets.

The Hornets were at Abernathy on Tuesday to take on the Antelopes. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Saturday with game two with Abernathy in Sudan.

First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
