The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team picked up a solid victory over Bovina on the road on Friday, 40-18, to stay alive in the hunt for a District Championship.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 6-3 overall, 3-1 in district play.
The Hornets totaled 410 yards of offense; including 212 passing yards and 198 yards rushing.
Trent Wilson got the scoring going in the first quarter with back-to-back one-yard rushing touchdowns. He nailed both PAT’s to put the Hornets in front, 14-0. Later in the quarter, Wilson connected with Sal Juarez for a 30-yard touchdown through the air, but the PAT from Wilson was no good, leaving the score, 20-0, as the first quarter came to a close.
Marcello King opened the second quarter with a 10-yard rushing touchdown, followed by the PAT from Wilson, stretching their lead to, 27-0. Bovina answered with a 34-yard touchdown pass, but the two-point conversion try was no good, leaving the score, 27-6. Sudan would fire right back on offense, as they drove down the field and capped off the drive with a fiveyard touchdown pass from Wilson that found Alan Flores. The PAT was no good by Wilson, leaving the score, 33-6, going into the locker room at halftime.
King found pay dirt on a fiveyard touchdown run to open the second half and Wilson nailed the PAT to push the lead to, 406. The Mustang’s responded again with a 14-yard touchdown run, but again missed on the twopoint conversion, making the score, 40-12, going into the final quarter of play.
In the fourth quarter, Bovina scored on a 58-yard touchdown run to make the score, 40-18, as Sudan took the district contest.
Wilson finished the game, 13--24 passing for 212 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding nine carries for 46 yards and two touchdowns.
King led the rushing attack for the Hornets, tallying 23 carries for 138 yards and two touchdowns, while Caleb Groetken added three carries for 10 yards.
Groetken led the receiving group with two catches for 64 yards, while Flores tallied three catches for 51 yards and a score, and Jaibryn Ornelas contributed three catches for 49 yards. Juarez tallied three catches for 44 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Karson Kauffman led the Hornets in total tackles with 17, including one for loss, while Flores finished with 15 tackles, including four for loss and one sack. Matthew Lopez finished with 12 tackles, four for loss and one sack, while Gabriel Lopez added four tackles, two for loss and one sack. Ornelas contributed two tackles and one interception.
The Hornets will close out the regular season this week with a home game against the Ralls Jackrabbits.
Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
