The Sudan Hornet’s varsity baseball team dropped a nail-biter to the New Deal Lions on the road on Tuesday, 8-7.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 8-5 overall on the season, 2-1 in district play.
New Deal scored a run in the first inning, taking a, 1-0, lead into the third inning, before they added three runs, to make the score, 4-0. Sudan battle back in the top of the fourth, scratching three runs across to cut the lead to, 4-3.
The lions packed on two insurance runs in the home-half of the fourth to make the score, 5-3, heading into the fifth inning. New Deal added a run in each of the next two innings, making the score, 83, going into the top of the seventh. But, the Hornets would push four runs across, coming up just short in their comeback efforts, falling to the Lions, 8-7.
On the mound, freshman, Cal Carter, threw four innings, giving up three walks, seven hits and six runs, five earned, while earning five strikeouts. Jesus Salas threw two innings, giving up four hits and two runs, one earned, while earning one strikeout.
The Hornets tallied four hits and eight walks as a team at the plate, led by Carter, who tallied two RBI’s one hit for a double and one walk. Junior, Marcello King, chipped in one RBI and one walk, while Jesus Salas finished with two walks. Senior, Trent Wilson, added two hits and a walk and junior, Derek Rosa, tallied one hit and one walk in the contest.
The Hornets hosted New Deal on Saturday for their second meeting of district play. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a home game against Floydada.
First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
