Fillies take down Shallowater JV, 57-40

The Olton Fillies’ varsity basketball team began tournament play at the Way Out West Tournament in Whiteface Thursday morning with a win over Shallowater’s JV squad, 57-40.

Taryn Smith was fouled on an attempt by Grace to open the contest; she made one-oftwo shots at the line to put Olton in front, 1-0, and Kaleigh Geldenhuys followed it up with a steal in their own end, taking it in for an easy lay-up, stretching their lead to, 3-0, with 6:45 to play in the opening quarter.

Geldenhuys grabbed another steal in their own end, this time, dishing it to Mariana Gallegos for a lay-up, pushing their lead out to, 5-0. Gallegos followed it up with a put-back off of her own miss, but Shallowater would answer, as Zoe dropped in a lay-up in transition off of the assist from Grace, trimming the lead to, 7-2, with 5:29 remaining in the quarter.

Phoenyx dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Katie Jo in transition and on their next possession, Katie Jo was fouled on an attempt by Halleekate Huguley. She made one-of-two shots at the line, triming the lead to, 7-5, with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter. Jentry Bressler nailed a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Gallegos, but on the other end, Katie Jo was fouled on an attempt by Geldenhuys, earning a trip to the line. She converted both shots to make it a three-point Olton lead, 107.

With two minutes to go in the quarter, Geldenhuys grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast for the lay-up, making the score, 12-7, as the first quarter came to a close.

Katie Jo took a charge on Smith to open the second frame, but Geldenhuys would respond with a steal near half court, dishing it to Bressler for the layup to extend their lead to, 14-7. Bressler followed it up with a lay-up off of the assist from Gallegos and Bressler would get to the basket again with 6:52 remaining in the half, stretching the lead to, 18-7.

Shallowater, though, would could storming back with 13 unanswered points to take the lead, 20-18, but with just under two minutes to go in the half, Smith would bury a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Gallegos to reclaim the lead for Olton, 21-20.

Lilah was fouled on an attempt by Geldenhuys and made one-of-two shots from the line to tie the game, but with under a minute to go in the half, Smith dropped in a put-back and on their next possession, Gallegos was fouled on an attempt by Phoenyx, earning a trip to the line. She split the shots at the line to push their lead to, 24-21. In the closing seconds of the half, Gallegos drove the middle for a lay-up, off of the assist from Geldenhuys, as she drew an and-one foul on Grace. She missed the free throw, but grabbed her own rebounding, scoring the put-back to make the score, 28-21, going into the locker room at halftime.

Smith was fouled on an attempt by Phoneyx to open the second half. She made both shots from the line and followed it up with a steal, dishing it ahead to Bressler for a lay-up, extending their lead to, 32-21, with just under a minute gone in the third quarter. Lilah dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Grace, but on the other end, Gallegos was fouled on an attempt by Grace, earning a trip to the line. She split the free throws and Smith followed it up with a steal in their own end, as she dished it down to Bressler for a lay-up, stretching the lead to, 35-23.

Grace dropped in a lay-up to end the scoring drought for Shallowater, but Kambri Ruiz answered with a lay-up in transition, making the score, 37-25. Shallowater would drop in another lay-up, but on the other end, Smith was fouled on a putback attempt by Lilah. She made one-of-two shots at the line, and after a turnover by Shallowater on the Olton end of the floor, Smith knocked dwon a jumper from the left elbow, pushing their lead to, 4027.

Shallowater took a time out with 3:15 to play in the third quarter, and out of the break, Bristol was fouled on an attempt by Kaitlyn Ruiz. She split the shots at the line, trimming the lead to, 40-28. Huguley drove the lane, bouncing a pass to Llama Ramirez for a lay-up, and Ramirez followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Bressler, extending their lead to, 44-28, with 1:12 remaining in the quarter.

Bristol split a pair of free throws to close out the third quarter with Olton in front, 4429.

Katie Jo was fouled on an attempt to open the fourth quarter and split the free throws, but on the other end, Gallegos drove the right side for a layup, off of the assist from Geldenhuys, making the score, 46-30. Katie Jo drove the right side for a lay-up for Shallowater and on the defensive end, Gracie took a charge on Gallegos to regain possession for Shallowater with 5:17 to play in the game.

Gracie would drop in a putback off of amiss by Alexa and Lilah split a pair of free throws, cutting the lead to, 46-35, with 4:13 to play in the game. Smith, though, would drain a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Bressler and Geldenhuys hit Smith with a bounce pass in the lane for a lay-up, as she drew an and-one foul on Katie Jo. Smith missed the free throw, leaving the score, 51-35.

With under three minutes to play, Geldenhuys knocked down a jumper in the lane, pushing their lead to, 53-35. Gracie was fouled on the floor and split the free throws for Shallowater, but on the next play, Bressler dished the outlet pass ahead to, Smith on the fast-break for a lay-up, making the score, 5536.

Gracie knocked down a jumper from the right wing for Shallowater, but Ramirez answered with a pass to Kaitlyn Ruiz for a lay-up, extending the lead to, 57-38. In the closing seconds, Bristol knocked down a pair of free throws, as Olton went on to take the contest, 5740.

The Fillies were led by Smith, who tallied 16 points. She was joined in double-figures scoring by Bressler, who netted 13 points and Gallegos, who finished with 12 points. Geldenhuys chipped in six points, while Kambri Ruiz and Ramirez each added four points and Kaitlyn Ruiz finished with two points in the contest.
