The Olton Fillies’ varsity basketball team won their second match-up of the Way Out West Tournament in Whiteface on Thursday taking down the Friona Squaws, 56-41.
With the win, the Fillies moved to 1-1 in tournament play on the weekend.
Harley London knocked down a jumper from the left wing to put the Squaws in front, 2-0, but it was short-lived, as Analise Ramage dropped in a lay-up from the right side to tie the game, 2-2, with 5:28 to play in the opening quarter. Yarely Santillan drove the lane dumping it off to Ramage for a layup, as she drew an and-one foul on Yase Faudoa. She missed the free throw, leaving the score, 4-2, as Friona took a time out with 4:15 to play in the first quarter.
Out of the break, Aaliyah Padilla dropped in a lay-up in transition to tie the game, 4-4, but Olton responded quickly, as Taryn Smith dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Ramage, putting the Fillies back in front, 6-4. Smith followed it up with a lay-up on their next possession, drawing an andone foul on Faudoa. She converted the free throw, making the score, 9-4, with three minutes remaining in the quarter.
Smith picked up a steal and was fouled on the break by London; she split the free throws, making the score, 10-4. Smith kept the rally going for Olton as she dropped in a put-back and followed it up with a three from the top of the key, off of the assist from Harlow Gorman, stretching their lead to, 15-4. With just over a minute remaining in the quarter, Smith dropped in a putback off of her own miss, drawing an and-one foul on the play. She converted the free throw to extend their lead to, 18-4.
In the closing seconds of the first quarter, Gorman buried a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Mariana Gallegos to push the Olton lead to, 21-4, heading into the second frame.
Friona would not go away, as Padilla drained a three from the right elbow to open quarter number two and then followed it up on the defense end, taking a charge on Ramage to regain possession for the Squaws. Aimee Jimenez dropped in a lay-up in transition for Friona to cut the lead to, 21-9, but on the other end, Gallegos was fouled on an attempt by Padilla. She made one-of-two shots from the line, making the score, 22-9, with just over six minutes to play in the half.
Jimnez picked up a steal and was fouled on a fast-break attempt by Kaleigh Geldenhuys, earning a trip to the line. She split the free throws, trimming the lead to, 2210. With 4:43 remaining in the half, Padilla was fouled on he floor and also split a pair of free throws to trim the lead to, 22-11, but, Olton would answer, as Ramage dropped in a lay-up, making the score, 24-11, with 4:33 to play in the first half.
Padilla was fouled on an attempt by Smith and split the attempts at the line, but Alyssa Rivera answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Kambri Ruiz, pushing the lead to, 26-12. With under four minutes to play in the half, Reese Steelman dropped in a put-back and on their next possession, London was fouled on the floor by Rivera and made one-of-two shots from the line making the score, 2615.
Santillan sent a long pass down court for Ruiz, who finished off the play with a lay-up, but Padilla fired right back with a floater in the lane, as the Squaws took a time out with 2:42 to play in the half. Out of the break, Ramage was fouled on a put-back attempt by Faudoa. She converted both attempts at the line and Gallegos followed it up with a three from the top of the key, off of the assist from Ramage, pushing their lead back out to, 3317.
Annison Steelman dropped in a lay-up for Friona and London was fouled on a fast-break by Santillan, earning a trip to the line. She split the free throws, and Friona would followed it up with back-to-back buckets to close out the half, slicing the lead to single-digits, 3324, going into the locker room at halftime.
Reese Steelman dropped in a baby hook shot in the lane, but Gallegos answered with a lay-up on the left side, making the score, 35-26, as Friona took a time out with 5:43 to play in the third. With just over five minutes remaining in the quarter, Santillan buried a three from the right elbow, before the Fillies took a time out with 4:53 to play in the quarter leading the Squaws, 38-26.
With under three minutes to play in the third, Ramage was fouled on the floor by Jimenez and made one-of-two shots at the line to stretch the lead to, 39-26. Reese Steelman drew a shooting foul on the other end, earning a trip to the line. She made the first and missed the second, but Faudoa grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled on the put-back try by Llama Ramirez. She too made oneof- two shots from the line, trimming the lead to, 39-28.
Smith would outscore the Squaws over the final 2:12 of the third quarter, 6-2, giving Olton a, 45-30, lead going into the final quarter of play.
Ramage was fouled on an attempt by London to open the fourth quarter; she converted both shots at the line to make the score, 47-30, and on their next possession Santillan passed the ball to Ramage, who hit a cutting Gallegos for a lay-up in transition on the left side, pushing the lead to, 49-30, with 6:31 left to play. Jimenez dropped in a lay-up off of a turnover by Santillan, as Olton took a time out with 5:06 to play, leading Friona, 49-32.
Out of the break, London pulled up for a jumper from the right elbow off of an Olton turnover, but on the other end, Gallegos was fouled on an attempt by Jimenez. She split the attempts at the line, extending the lead to, 50-34, with 4:41 to play in the game. Padilla dropped in a put-back off of her own miss for Friona, but Ruiz answered with a lay-up and Ramage followed it up on defense by taking a charge on Annison Steelman with 3:42 to play in the game.
Friona took a time out with 2:20 to play, and out of the break, Geldenhuys was fouled on the floor and made one-of-two shots at the line, pushing the lead to, 5336. With under a minute to play, Smith dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Jimenez. She sank the free throw to push the Olton lead to, 20 points, 56-36.
Friona would score the final five points of the contest, as Olton took the win, 56-41.
The Fillies were led by Smith, who finished with 23 points. She was joined in double-figures scoring by Ramage, who finished with 11 points. Gallegos chipped in nine points, while Ruiz contributed four points and Santillan and Gorman each added three points. Rivera tallied two points and Geldenhuys finished with one point in the contest.
