Fillies fall to Lady Rockets, 64-23, in Abernathy

The Olton Fillies’ varsity basketball team fell to the Wellington Lady Rockets on Thursday morning, 64-23, in the first round of the Abernathy Basketball Tournament.

With the loss, the Fillies fall to 0-4 overall on the season.

Presley Kane picked up a steal and got it ahead to Allie Duncan for a lay-up on the fast-break to open the contest and Olton took a time out with 6:03 to play in the opening quarter. Out of the break, Charley Wilbur knocked down a jumper from the left elbow off of the assist from Kane, but Olton answered, as Aspen Struve knocked down a jumper from the right wing, off of the assist from Sarah Chavira, trimming the lead to, 4-2, with 5:02 to play in the first quarter.

Kane knocked down a three from the right wing off of the assist from Wilbur and Duncan followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Kane, pushing their lead to, 9-2. With 3:43 remaining in the quarter, Kaitlin Bawcom was fouled on a fast-break attempt by Analise Ramage and converted both shots at the line to make the score, 11-2.

Briley Waters dropped in a layup in transition off of the outlet pass from Kane, as Wellington went on an, 8-0, scoring run to stretch the lead to, 19-2. With time winding down in the quarter, Chavira picked up a steal from Leslie Orozco and took it to the hoop for a fast-break lay-up, but Harlee Gomez would close out the quarter with a lay- up for Wellington, making the score, 214.

Gomez opened the second frame with a steal from Chavira, taking it to the hoop for an easy lay-up, and Wilbur followed it up with a three from the right elbow, pushing their lead to, 26-4. Gomez dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Wilbur, as Olton took a time out to talk things over with 5:41 to play in the half.

Out of the break, Orozco picked up a steal and tossed it ahead to Gomez for a lay-up and Bree Benkley followed it up with a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Wilbur, stretching their lead to, 33-4, with 4:22 remaining in the first half. Wellington went on a, 7-0, scoring run, before Yarely Santillan knocked down a three from the left elbow, however at the buzzer Orozco drained a three from the right elbow to push their lead to, 43-7, going into the locker room at halftime.

Kane kicked up a steal to open the second half, getting it ahead to Bawcom for the fast-break layup, but with 4:17 to play in the third, Olton took a charge on Briley Waters. On their next possession, Kaleigh Geldenhuys was fouled on the floor by Wilbur; she sank both free throws, trimming the lead to, 45-9, as Wellington took a time out with 3:42 to play in the quarter.

Out of the break, Brynlee Proffitt dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Abby Garcia and on the defense end, Gomez toom a charge on Geldenhuys to regain possession for the Lady Rockets with 1:14 to play in the third quarter. Gomez drained a three from the top of the key and Garcia followed it up with a lay-up to close out the quarter with Wellington in control, 52-9.

Benkley was fouled on an attempt by Geldnhuys to open the fourth quarter; she split the attempts and Gomez and Benkley followed it up with back-to-back lay-ups to push their lead to, 57-9, with 6:06 left to play in the game. Ramage dropped in a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Chavira to trim the lead to, 57-11, with 5:38 to play, but Wellington responded, as Proffitt dropped in a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Benkley, making the score, 59-11.

Ramage drew a shooting foul on Lexee Mae Benk and converted both free throws, as Wellington took a time out with 4:56 to play in the contest. Out of the break, Proffitt dropped in a lay-up, but Olton answered, as Chavira dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Orozco. She missed the free throw, but Kambri Ruiz was there for the offensive rebound, which led to a three from the left elbow by Ramage, off of the assist from Geldenhuys, cutting the lead to, 61-18.

Ruiz dropped in a lay-up in the lane off of the assist from Ramage and Chavira followed it up with a lay-up off of a steal, making the score, 61-22, with 2:37 left to play. Ruiz split a pair of free throws for the Fillies, but with time winding down, Gomez buried a three from the righ elbow as Olton fell to Wellington, 64-23.

Ramage led the Fillies in scoring with seven points, while Chavira tallied six points and Santillan and Ruiz each finished with three points. Struve and Geldenhuys each added two points in the contest.

The Fillies took on Coahoma Friday morning in the second round of the Abernathy Tournament. Results were not available at press time.
