The Olton Fillies’ varsity basketball team saw their season come to an end on Monday, in the Class 2ADI Bi-district round of the basketball play-offs, as they fell to Abernathy, 75-44.
With the loss, the Fillies end the season with a mark of 25-7 overall, 7-3 in district play.
Mariana Gallegos was fouled on a put-back attempt by Kendal Miller to open the contest. She made one-of-two shots at the line, but Lacy Bloskas answered with a lay-up to put the Lady Lopes in front, 2-1. Kaileigh Geldenhuys responded, driving the left side for a lay-up, as Olton took a time out to talk things over.
Out of the break, Taryn Smith used a euro-step to get into the paint for a layup, but Bloskas again answered with a put-back on the other end for Abernathy and Breanna Shorter folowed it up with a tranistion lay-up, putting the Lady Lopes back in front, 6-5, with 4:36 to play in the first quarter.
Shorter drove the middle for a lay-up, and on the next play, Kaybree Ramon saved a ball from going out of bounds, but it went right into the hands of Miller, who dropped in a lay-up for Abernathy, making the score, 10-5. With 2:43 to play in the first quarter, Emmerson Easterwood was fouled on an attempt by Geldenhuys. She made one-of-two shots at the line, making the score, 11-5.
Abernathy’s scoring run continued, as Shorter was fouled on a fast-break by Jentry Bressler. She converted both shots at the line to stretch their lead to, 135. Beelitz was fouled on the other end by Bloskas; she made one- of- two shots from the line to end the scoring drought for Olton, making the score, 13-6.
Easterwood dropped in a floater in the lane, but Beelitz answered with a put-back off of a miss by Gallegos, drawing an andone foul on Bloskas. She missed the free throw leaving the score, 15-8, with just over a minute to play in the opening frame. Miller hit Bryer Cook with a bounce pass in transition for a layup, but Beelitz, again, answered with a lay-up, drawing an and- one foul on Cook. She converted the free throw to make it a sixpoint game, 17- 11. Abernathy answered with a bucket, but in the closing seconds of the quarter, Beelitz was fouled on an attempt by Cook, her second foul of the game. Beelitz split the attempts at the line to make the score, 19-12, as the first quarter came to a close.
Easterwood was fouled on an attempt by Geldenhuys to open the second quarter. She split the attempts at the line, but on the other end, the Fillies responded, as Bressler hit Smith for a lay-up on the left side, making the score, 2014, with 6:20 to play in the half. Miller dropped in a floater for Abernathy, as Olton took a time out with 6:03 left to play in the first half.
Out of the break, Luv Finch dropped in a runner in the lane that sparked an, 11-0, scoring run for the Lady Lopes, pushing their lead to, 33-14, with three minutes to play in the half. Gallegos grabbed her own rebound and dropped it in for a put-back to end the drought for Olton, but Abernathy responded quickly, as Eaterwood knocked down a jumper in the lane, and Finch dished a pass ahead to Miller on their next possession for a fast-break lay-up, making the score, 37-16.
Olton took a time out with 2:02 to play in the game, Gallegos dropped in a layup and the Fillies followed it up with another bucket to trim the lead to, 37-20. With under a minute to play in the half, Gallegos picked up a steal as she got out on the fast-break, using a jump stop on the left side to move the defender, before dropping in a lay-up to cut the lead to, 37-22.
In the closing seconds of the half, Shorter was fouled on a fast-break attempt by Smith, her second of the game. She made one-oftwo free throws, as Abernathy took a, 38-22, lead into the locker room at halftime.
Easterwood knocked down a jumper from the free-throw line to open the second half, and with 7:28 to play in the third quarter, Miller was fouled on an attempt by Geldenhuys, her fourth of the game. She made one- of- two shots from the line, as Abernathy pushed their lead to, 41-22.
Bressler drove the right side for a lay-up, but on the other end Miller was fouled on an attempt by Kambri Ruiz. She made one-of-two shots from the line, pushing their lead to, 42-24. Cook dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Ruiz. She converted the free throw and Finch followed it up with a drive on the left side for a lay-up, extending their lead to, 47-24.
With under five minutes to go in the third, Ella Azam dropped in a floater in the lane, but Cook answered with a three from the right elbow to make the score, 50-26. Azam dropped in another floater in the lane, as Olton took a time out with 3:59 to play in the quarter. Easterwood was fouled on an attempt by Smith, her fourth foul of the game. She converted both shots at the line to stretch their lead to, 52-28.
Miller split a pair of free throws for Abernathy after being fouled by Azam, but on the other end, Gallegos dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Cook, her fourth of the game. Gallegos missed the free throw, leaving the score, 5330, with 1:53 to go in the third. Miller was fouled on the floor and knocked down a pair of free throws for Abernathy, but Gallegos answered on the other end with a spin to the basket for a jumper from the right side, trimming the lead to, 55-32.
Abernathy took a time out to prevent a turnover with 45.7 seconds to go, and out of the break, Miller knocked down a jumper from the right elbow to push their lead to, 57-32. With time winding down in the quarter, Llama Ramirez dropped in a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Azam on the baseline and on their next possession, Gallegos was fouled on a shot attempt by Easterwood, her second of the game. She sank both shots at the line, trimming the lead to, 57-36, going into the final quarter of play.
Finch drove the lane, dishing the ball to Bloskas for a lay-up on the left side to open the fourth quarter, and Smith fouled out for Olton with 7:18 to play in the game. Gallegos grabbed a steal on their own end, drawing a shooting foul on Shorter, her fourth. She made one- of- two shots from the line, making the score, 59-37, with 6:13 to play in the game.
Easterwood scored backto- back buckets for Abernathy, but Geldenhuys answered with a drive for a lay-up on the left side, making the score, 63-39, with 4: 12 left to play. Bloskas dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Easterwood, but on the other end, Bressler was fouled on an attempt by Bloskas, her fourth. She made one- of- two shots from the line, making the score, 65-40.
With 3: 25 to play, Easterwood dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Beelitz. She converted the free throw, pushing their lead to, 68-40. Easterwood split a pair of free throws after being fouled on an attempt by HalleKate Huguley, and Shorter followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Cook, making the score, 7140.
Wit just over a minute left to play Huguley split a pair of free throws, as Cook fouled out of the game for Abernathy, but Giana leon answered with a lay-up on the left side for the Lady Lopes, making the score, 73- 41. Azam grabbed a steal for Olton, dishing it to Ramon, who was fouled on an attempt. She split the shots at the line, making the score, 73-42.
Pilar Rodriguez and Ramirez exchanged lay-ups to close out the game, as Abernathy took down Olton, 75-44.
The Fillies were led by Gallegos, who netted 14 points. Beelitz chipped in seven points, while Geldenhuys, Smith, Ramirez and Azam each added four points and Bressler added three points. Ramon and Huguley each finished with one point in the contest.
