Fillies cruise past Crosbyton at Whitharral Invitational, 55-11

The Olton Fillies’ varsity basketball team took down Crosbyton on Friday, 55-11, to improve to 2-0 at the Whitharral Invitational.

With the win, the Fillies improve to 12-4 overall on the year.

Kaleigh Geldenhuys opened the contest with a lay-up for the Fillies and on their next possession, Mariana Gallegos was fouled on an attempt by Flores, earning a trip to the line. She converted both free throws to stretch their lead to, 4-0. Kambri Ruiz kept it going with a put-back and Geldenhuys followed it up with a steal in their own end, taking it to the hoop for an easy lay-up, pushing their lead to, 8-0, with 5:42 to play in the opening quarter.

Olton stayed on the offensive, as Gallegos hit Ruiz on the fastbreak for a lay-up making the score, 10-0, as Crosbyton took a time out with 4:17 to play in the first quarter. Out of the break, Geldenhuys dropped in a lay-up in transition off of the assist from Analise Ramage, stretching their lead to, 12-0. With just over a minute remaining in the quarter, Geldenguys dropped in a lay-up on the left side, off of the assist from Harlow Gorman and Llama Ramirez closed out the first quarter with a put-back, pushing the lead to, 16-0, going into quarter number two.

With less than a minute gone in the second frame, Geldenhuys was fouled on a put-back attempt by Marissa Munoz; she split the attempts at the line, extending the lead to, 17-0. Geldenhuys turned defense into offense, as she picked up a steal and got it ahead to Gallegos on the fast-break for a lay-up and Ruiz followed it up with a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Ramage, making the score, 22-0.

With 5:21 to play in the half, Ramage took a charge on Munoz, and Olton took a time out with 5:05 left to play in the first half. Out of the break, Lilly Rodriguez knocked down a jumper from the left elbow to get Crosbyton on the board, but Ruiz answered with a floater in the lane, and Geldenhuys dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Rebekka Lopez, making the score, 26-2.

With just over a minute to play in the first half, Lilly Rodriguez was fouled on an attempt by Lopez and sank both free throws to trim the lead to, 26-3, however Kaybree Ramon would close out the first half with a lay-up off of the assist from Geldenhuys, making the score, 28-3, going into the locker room at halftime.

Gallegos opened the second with a bucket for Olton and followed it up with a three from the right wing, before Taryn Smith dropped in a lay-up to stretch their lead to, 35-5, with 5:34 to play in the third quarter. Ramirez dropped in a put-back off of her own miss and on the next play, Yarely pushed the ball down court to Smith, who dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and- one foul on Araceli Rodriguez. She missed the free throw leaving the score, 39-5, as Crosbyton took a time out to talk things over with 4:24 to play in the quarter.

With 1:41 left to play in the third, Ramirez was fouled on an attempt by Demi Daugherty and split the attempts at the line, making the score, 40-5. Smith picked up as teal and passed it to Alyssa Rivera, who sent an outlet pass down court to Harlow Gorman, who dropped in the lay-up on the fastbreak, pushing their lead to, 42-5.

Ramon hit Ramirez down low for a lay-up, but with under a minute to play, Salazar was fouled on the floor by Smith, earning a trip to the line. She made one-of-two shots from the line, trimming the lead to, 44-6. Smith split a pair of free throws to close out the third quarter with Olton in control, 456.

Lilly Rodriguez scored back-toback buckets for Crosbyton to open the fourth quarter, but Santillan picked up a steal and took it to the hoop for a lay-up and Gallegos followed it up with back-to-back steals that led to layups, stretching their lead to, 5110, with 4:24 to play in the contest. Ruiz hit Geldenhuys in transition for a lay-up and two plays later, Smith dropped in a lay-up to stretch the lead to, 55-10.

Munoz would make one-ofthree free throws to close out the game, as Olton took the contest, 55-11.

The Fillies were led by Gallegos and Geldenhuys, who each poured in 13 points. Ramirez, Ruiz and Smith each tallied seven points, while Ramon, Santillan and Gorman each finished with twp points in the contest.
