The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softball team picked up their first-district win of the season on Wednesday, as they took down the Denver City Fillies on the road, 8-4.
With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 1-2 in District play.
The Lady Cats didn’t waste any time getting on the board in the top of the first inning, as Natalia Sanchez drew a lead-off walk and took second on a pitch and third on a past ball, before Cadence Sanchez drove her in with an RBIsingle into right-center field, making the score, 1-0. Brookelyn Gau hit into a fielder’s choice to Jasmyn Villarreal at third, who got the force out at second base for out number one.
Katelyn Gau popped up to Villarreal at third for out number two, but MyKenzie Price singled through the left side and the runners advanced on a past ball, before Tricia Torres struck out swinging to retire the side.
Jolette Rodriguez had a short pop fly drop behind the circle to give the Fillies a base runner, and took second on a pitch, before Jackie Lozano hit a sacrifice grounder to Brookelyn Gau in the circle, as Rodriguez advanced to third with one out. Mariela Ceniceros hit a sacrifice fly to Alex Hernandez in right field, as the runner at third tagged up and scored to make the score, 1-1, with two outs.
Villarreal would strike out looking to end the inning.
Both teams went scoreless through the second inning, but the Lady Cats would break through again in the top of the third inning, after Adamari Rodriguez relieved Lozano in the circle for the Fillies.
Cadence drew a walk to lead things off and she stole second on a pitch, third on a throw down into center field and she scored on the play as the throw from center field rolled past Villarreal at third base, making the score, 2-1. Brookelyn Gau struck out swinging for out number one, but Katelyn Gau singled on a throwing error to first by Haley Orona at shortstop.
However, Price popped up to Rodriguez in the circle for out number two and Torres hit a chopper to third and was thrown out at first to retire the side.
In the bottom half of the inning, Maite Larrea struck out looking and Jolette Rodriguez struck out swinging for out number two. Adamarie Rodriguez singled on a line drive to right field, but Ceniceros grounded out to Taryn Golden at third to end the inning.
The Lady Cats got the offense going again in the top of the fourth inning, as Golden singled on an error by Orona at shortstop, but Hernandez hit into a fielder’s choice to Adamarie Rodriguez in the circle, who got the out at second for out number one. Logan singled up the middle, as Arianna Cruz came on as the courtesy runner for the catcher.
Natalia Sanchez singled under the glove of Lozano at second base to load the bases, but Cadence Sanchez popped up to Jolette Rodriguez behind the plate for out number two. Brookelyn Gau, though, with two strikeouts, blasted a grand slam to right-center field to put the Lady Cats back in front, 6-1. Katelyn Gau would ground out to Orona at shortstop to retire the side.
After a quiet fifth inning for both squads, Ceniceros relieved Adamarie Rodriguez to begin the sixth inning for Denver City.
Logan flew out to center field and Natalia Sanchez popped up to shallow center field for out number two, before Cadence Sanchez singled through the left side. Brookelyn Gau ripped an RBItriple into right-center field to extend their lead to, 7-1. Katelyn Gau followed it up with an RBI-single to center field to push the lead to, 8-1.
Katelyn Gau took second on a past ball, before Price drew a walk, but Torres would ground out to Adamarie Rodriguez at shortstop to retire the side.
The Fillies added one run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI-double off of the right-center field fence, and they added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, before Gau got Ceniceros to fly out to Torres in center field for the final out of the game, as the Lady Cats took the contest, 8-4.
Brookelyn Gau pitched a complete game for the Lady Cats, going all seven innings. She earned nine strikeouts, while giving up two walks and four runs.
The Lady Cats were at Dimmitt on Saturday as district play continued. Results were not available at press time. They will close out the first half of district play on Tuesday with a home game against Muleshoe.
First pitch is scheduled for noon.
