Amherst closes out regular season with win on Thursday

The Amherst Bulldogs’ varsity football team closed out the regular season with a victory on Senior Night over the Lazbuddie Longhorns, 56-7. Amherst kicked off to begin the game, as Brennon Garcia tried an onside kick, but it was covered by the Longhorns at their own 32yard line.

Lazbuddie was able to move the ball up near midfield, but on fourth and nine, the Longhorns were stopped short of the line to gain for a turnover on downs with 8:05 to play in the opening quarter.

The Bulldogs took over at the Lazbuddie 37-yard line, as Fabian Reyes tossed the ball to Joel Garcia, who took it around the right side for the touchdown with 7:56 to play in the first quarter. The kick by Aiden Rodriguez was no good, leaving the score, 6-0.

Lazbuddie fielded a short kick-off and got a big return all the way down to the six-yard line, but just two plays into the drive, the Longhorns were picked off by Rodriguez, who returned the ball 79 yards for a picksix with 6:50 to play in the first quarter. The PAT from Rodriguez was no good, making the score, 12-0.

The Longhorns would respond on their next drive, with a four-yard touchdown run followed by the onepoint conversion, trimming the lead to, 12-7, with 3:41 to play in the quarter.

The Bulldog offense took over at the Lazbuddie 34--yard line and on the first play of the drive, Joel Garcia broke loose up the middle for the 34-yard touchdown run with 3:29 to play in the quarter. The kick by Rodriguez was no good, leaving the score, 18-7.

The Longhorns would take the ball down to the Amherst three-yard line, but on second and goal, the ball was stripped out by Rodriguez and returned 77 yards the other way for the touchdown with 12.9 seconds to play in the quarter. The kick by Joel Garcia was good, pushing their lead to, 26-7.

Lazbuddie’s next drive spanned into the second quarter, but on fourth and long their pass was broken up by Rodriguez for a turnover on downs with 8:34 to play in the half.

Amherst took over at the Lazbuddie 26-yard line, as Rodriguez took a run around the left side down to the 13-yard line. On the next play, he would carry the ball around the right side for the 13-yard touchdown with 8:22 to play in the half. The kick by Joel Garcia was good, making the score, 347.

The Longhorns took over at their own 20-yard line after the long kick off from Guillermo Pacheco.

Lazbuddie would get the ball into Amherst territory, but on fourth and 13, they were stuffed for a turnover on downs with 5:01 to play in the second quarter.

Amherst took over on offense at their own 34-yard line, as Joel Garcia hit Reyes with a pass to his right for 11 yards. On the next play, Rodriguez carry the ball to his left before cutting back across the field for a 34yard touchdown run with 4:11 to play in the second quarter. The kick from Joel Garcia was good, making the score, 42-7.

The Longhorn’s struggles on offense continued, as they had the ball stripped out on fourth down by Rodriguez, and it was recovered by theBulldogs with two minutes to play in the half.

The Bulldogs would tack on another touchdown with 2.2 seconds to play to close out the game, 56-7.
