The Olton Mustang’s varsity football team was clicking on all cylinders on Friday when they shutout Dimmitt, 43-0, in their home-opener at Mustang Stadium.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 2-0 overall on the season.
The Mustangs totaled 295 yards of offense, including 189 yards rushing and 106 yards passing.
The Mustangs got the ball to open the contest, but after going for a fake punt on fourth and long that came up short, they turned the ball over on downs with 7:46 to play in the opening quarter. Dimmitt took over at their own 21yard line, but just three plays into the drive, a fumbled pitch was recovered by the Mustangs with 7:03 to play in the first quarter.
Olton took over at the Dimmitt 22-yard line and after a UIL timeout with 5:59 to play in the quarter, they were faced with a third and 11. Baldo Garcia took a run to the left for 10 yards to bring up fourth and one. Chancy trucked forward for a first down on fourth and short, taking the ball down to the six-yard line. Chancy took the carry on first and goal, taking the ball down to the two-yard line, and on the next play, Raymond Ramirez pitched the ball back to Chancy, who powered through the middle for the two-yard score with 4:38 remaining in the quarter. The PAT by Fabian Gutierrez was good, making the score, 7-0.
The Olton defense forced a three-and-out on Dimmitt’s next drive, but a bad snap on the punt resulted in Vicente Soto being sacked by Eddie Medrano, giving Olton the ball at the 18-yard line with 3:47 to play in the first.
The Mustangs would drive down to the Dimmitt seven-yard line, but on fourth and goal, Ramirez was picked off in the endzone by Isiah Sifuentes, who brought the ball out to the 18-yard line with just under a minute to play in the quarter.
Dimmitt took their next possession into the second quarter, but on second and 16, Jack Lunsford was picked off by Jacob Marquez, who returned it for the touchdown with 11:38 to play in the first half. Alan Vasquez picked up a bad snap on the PAT and found Marquez for the two-point conversion to make the score, 15-0.
After a series of empty possessions, Olton took over after a punt at the Dimmitt 25-yard line, as Ramirez picked up a yard on the quarterback keeper on first down. His pass on second down fell incomplete, but on third and nine, Ramirez rolled out to his left and hit Nate Urbina for a 24-yard touchdown with 3:41 to play in the half. The PAT by Gutierrez was no good, leaving the score, 21-0.
Dimmitt punted with 23 seconds remaining in the first half, and on first and 10, Ramirez dropped back from the Dimmitt 46-yard line, rolling out to the left, he delivered a deep pass that found Urbina for the touchdown. The snap was bobbled on the PAT, leaving the score, 27-0, going into the locker room at halftime.
After several empty possessions in the third quarter, Olton took over with 3:36 to play in the quarter at the Dimmitt 44-yard line. The Mustangs marched the ball down to the 10-yard line, as the third quarter came to a close. The Mustang’s were faced with third and goal to open the fourth quarter, as Ramirez faked a hand-off, keeping it himself for a five-yard touchdown with 11:52 t play in the contest. The PAT by Gutierrez was good, making the score, 34-0.
Dimmitt got the ball back after the kick-off at their own 31-yard line, but on third and 26 from their own 15-yard line, Lunsford was pressured by Kodee Roque and he threw the ball up and it was caught by Vasquez, who returned it for the three-yard touchdown with 9:50 to play in the game. The PAT was good, making the score, 41-0.
Olton’s defense would force a safety with 1:35 left in the game, as they took the contest, 43-0.
Offensively, Ramirez finished seven-of-14 passing for 106 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He added seven carries for 61 yards and one touchdown.
In the rushing game, Chancy tallied nine carries for 42 yards and a score, while Isaiah Ruiz chipped in seven carries for 33 yards, and Fabian Gutierrez contributed eight carries for 31 yards. Baldo Garcia also added seven carries for 13 yards.
In the receiving game, Urbina led all receivers with three catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Jimmy Munoz tallied two carries for 20 yards.
Defensively, the Mustangs recorded a safety, an interception, two fumble recoveries and two defensive touchdowns.
The Mustangs will be at Texico, N.M., on Friday to take on the Wolverines.
Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
