Lady Cats sweep estacado in straight sets, 3-0

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity volleyball team swept the Estacado Lady Matadors at Wildcat Gymnasium on Tuesday, 3-0.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 8-3 overall on the season.

The Lady Matadors opened the first set on a, 3-0, scoring run before a kill by Maggie McNeese was blocked by Cyvaeah Johnson, but the ball landed out of bounds for a Lady Cat point to make the score, 1-3. A tip by Taryn Golden was hit into the net on a set by Ukiah Upshaw and a hit on the next play by Cyvaeah Johnson landed out of bounds to tie the set, 3-3.

Upshaw was called for a double hit on a set, but Estacado bounced back on the next play, as Tashawn Spence delivered a kill in front of Kennadi Hanlin to tie the set, 4-4. The Lady Matadors couldn’t get a rally going, as Upshaw was called for another double hit on her set, putting Littlefield back in front, 5-4.

Cyvaeah Johsnon answered with a kill in the center of the court for Estacado, but a tip by Upshaw on the next play, floated over the back boundary line out of bounds to make the score, 6-5. A tip by Julie Bownds landed inside the back boundary line for a kill and Cali Saldana served up an ace off of Spence to push their lead to, 8-5, before her next serve sailed out of bounds.

Bownds responded for Littlefield on the next play as she sent a kill past Spence and she followed it up with an ace off ofAmariAtkins to stretch their lead to, 10-6, as Estacado took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Myli Hernandez was blocked by Jada Green for a kill, but on the next play, Green sent a hit short of the net, making the score, 11-7, as Littlefield regained the serve.

The Lady Cats couldn’t capitalize on the turnover, as Bri Valdez’s serve sailed out of bounds, trimming the lead to, 12-8. The Lady Cats were called for being aligned illegally on the serve by Green and on the next play, McNeese had a hit land out of bounds on the sideline, slicing the lead to, 12-10.

Valdez was called for a double hit on a set, trimming the lead to, 12-11, as Littlefield Head Coach Kaylee Edgemon called a timeout to talk things over. Out of the break, Hernandez dropped in a tip off of Trinity Thomas for a kill to push their lead back out to, 13-11. Estacado, though, would not go away, as they rallied back and an ace by Upshaw off of Hanlin gave the Lady Matadors the lead, 13-14.

Littlefield responded quickly, as Hernandez delivered a kill in front of the block attempt by Cyvaeah Johnson and Spence to tie the set, 1414. Takyrie Ranson sent a tip outside the foul pole and Upshaw sent a hit out of bounds on the next play to stretch the Littlefield lead to, 16-14. Cyvaeah Johnson delivered a kill into the net for Estacado, but the rally ended when Golden sent a hit sailing out of bounds making the score, 1715.

Spence sent a serve short of the net for Estacado, but a set by Ray dropped for an Estacado kill after some miss-communication by Bownds and Jordan, trimming the lead to, 18-16. Atkins sent a serve short of the net for the Lady Matadors, but they responded on the next play, as Addison Thomas tipped the net for a kill past Bownds, making the score, 19-17.

Bownds answered right back with a kill past Green and she followed it up with an ace off of Thomas to make the score, 21-17. Hernandez and Jordan delivered back-to-back kills to make the score, 23-17, as Estacado took a time out and out of the break, Hernandez delivered a kill off ofAtkins and Bownds followed it up with an ace in front of Thomas as Littlefield took set one, 25-17.

The Lady Cats opened set two with three consecutive aces by Hernandez, before Cyvaeah Johnson delivered a kill in front of Bownds to get the Lady Matadors on the board trailing, 3-1. Upshaw, though, sent a serve short of the net, and Ray followed it up with an ace off of Thomas to make the score, 5-1, as Estacado took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, Golden sent a hit into the net for Littlefield, but Estacado couldn’t capitalize, as Spence’s serve fell short of the net making the score, 6-2. Bownds tipped the net for a kill off of Spence and she followed it up with a kill past Cyvaeah Johsnon to stretch their lead to, 8-2. Saldana served up an ace and Cyvaeah Johnson sent a hit out of bounds on the next play to extend the lead to, 102.

Thomas delivered a kill in front of Brown to end the Littlefield scoring run and Cyvaeah Johnson followed it up with an ace, before Thomas was called for touching the net on a tip on the next play, making the score, 11-4. Upshaw was called for a double-hit on a set and on the following play, Green was blocked by Hernandez for a kill to push their lead to, 13-4.

A serve by Bownds fell short of the net, but Hernandez responded with a kill in the back corner of the court over Atkins, making the score, 14-5. Valdez served up an ace off of Atkins and a block by McNeese and Hernandez lead to a carry by Green to stretch their lead to, 16-5. Valdez served up another ace, as Estacado again took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, Eboni Banks tipped the net for a kill, but Thomas’ next serve landed out of bounds on the sideline making the score, 18-6. Hanlin served up an ace for the Lady Cats, before a tip on the next play by Valdez landed out of bounds, however, Estacado couldn’t capitalize, as Thomas came across the net on a tip, making the score, 20-7.

Cyvaeah Johnson sent a kill past Hernandez and Upshaw followed it up with an ace off of McNeese, before McNeese sent a hit on the next play into the net, trimming the lead to, 20-10. Bownds though would answer with back-to-back kills, and Ray followed it up with an ace to make the score, 23-10. Cyvaeah Johnson sent a kill sailing out of bounds and Upshaw sent a tip into the net, as the Lady Cats took set 2, 25-10.

Upshaw’s serve to open set three fell short of the net, but Cyvaeah Johnson answered with a kill in front of Bownds to tie the set, 1-1. Back-toback miscues by Ranson put Littlefield up by two points and an ace by Ray made the score, 4-1, before she was called for a double-hit on the next play, turning the serve back over to Estacado.

The Lady Matadors couldn’t get anything going, as another pair of miscues made the score, 6-2, before Thomas dropped a tip over Bownds for a kill, making the score, 6-3. Bownds responded quickly with a kill off of Atkins, and Banks sent a kill into the net, making the score, 8-3. Bownds’ next serve sailed out of bounds, and several plays later, Estacado would tie the set, 12-12, as a tip from Cyvaeah Johnson fell in front of Hanlin for a kill.

The teams went back-and-forth until a serve form Spence fell short of the net making the score, 15-14. Thomas sent a kill sailing out of bounds for the Lady Matadors and Cyvaeah Johnson sent a hit into the net, pushing the Littlefield lead to, 17-14. The Lady Matadors would not go away, as they battled back to tie the set once more, after a bad set up by Saldana made the score, 19-19.

Littlefield took a time out to talk things over, and out of the break, Bownds sent a tip over the net, that Banks couldn’t get to on the dig and Jordan followed it up with a kill on the sideline to make the score, 21-19. Hernandez delivered a kill off of the block attempt by Green and Thomas, but Banks had a tip get tipped out of bounds by Ray to cut the lead to, 2220.

Thomas’ serve fell short of the net on the next play, but Spence answered with a kill in front of Saldana to make the score, 23-21. Green, though, had a serve fall short of the net and Hernandez delivered a kill in front of the Estacado block try to close out the set, 25-21, and the match, 3-0.

The Lady Cats began play at the Tulia Tournament Thursday. Results were not available at press time. They will be back at Wildcat Gym on Tuesday to take on Ropes.

First set is scheduled for 6 p.m.
