The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team took on Shallowater in their opener at New Home on Friday, falling to the Mustangs, 47-36.
The Mustangs opened the contest on an, 11-0, scoring run, before Sir Pratt dropped in a lay-up to get the Wildcats on the board, trimming the lead to, 11-2. The Mustangs answered with a putback, but Omar Martinez dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Ryan Williams and Williams followed it up with a bounce pass to Josiah Garcia in transition for a layup to cut the lead to, 13-6, with 9:30 to play in the first half.
Williams dropped in a reverse lay-up off of the assist from Cam McCarty, but Shallowater answered with a mid-range jumper to make the score, 15-8, with 7:19 remaining in the half. MJ Randle took the ball to the hoop for a layup and Pratt pump faked for a layup under the basket to make it a three-point game, 15-12, with 5:43 remaining in the half.
Jeremiah Trevino picked up a steal and took it to the hoop for a fast-break lay-up, but Shallowater answered with a lay-up off of an inbound play, making the score, 17-14. The Mustangs went on a 5-0 scoring run, before Randle dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Chip Green, making the score, 22-16, with 1:33 to play in the half.
With time winding down in the half, Shallowater dropped in a layup to stretch their lead to, 24-16, going into halftime.
Randle opened the second half for Littlefield with a pass to Green in transition for a lay- up and Martinez followed it up with a putback off of a miss by Randle in transition to cut the lead to four points, 24-20, with 14:58 remaining in the game. Shallowater dropped in a put-back, but Green picked up a steal and got it ahead to Martinez, who dished it across the court to Williams for a lay-up to make it a four-point game, 2622.
With 13:04 left to play, Williams knocked down a jumper from the left elbow to make it a one-possession game, but the Mustangs responded with a lay-up to make the score, 28-24. Randle picked up a steal and got it ahead to Martinez for a quick lay-up and Littlefield took a time out with 9:05 left to play in the game.
Out of the break, Pratt got an offensive rebound and put-back to tie the game, 28-28, with 8:35 remaining in the contest. Shallowater took a time out with 7:31 to play, and out of the break, the Mustangs scored back- toback buckets, before Williams dropped in a floater from the left baseline to cut the Mustangs’ lead to, 32-30, with 4:47 left to play.
Shallowater dropped in a lay-up, but Williams answered with a reverse lay-up for the Wildcats to keep it a one-possession game, 3432. Shallowater scored five straight points, before Littlefield dropped in a bucket to make the score, 39-34, with 2:27 left to play in the game. The Mustangs and Wildcats traded baskets once more, before Shallowater went on a, 6-0, run to end the game, as Littlefield fell to the Mustangs, 4736.
