The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softball team rallied past the Brownfield Lady Cubs on Tuesday with a, 7-6, walk-off victory to improve to 2-0 in district play.
Millie Castillo doubled to left field on a dropped pop up by Alex Hernandez to begin the first inning and Kenley Salas followed it up with a two-run homerun to left field to put the Lady Cats up, 2-0.
Brailee Franco grounded out to Natalia Sanchez at second base for out number one and Malorie Martinez flew out to Myli Hernandez in right field for out number two. Brianne Franco hit a shot to Bryndle Ray at shortstop, who fired to first for out number three to retire the side.
Both teams went three-up-andthree- down during their next atbats, but in the bottom of the second inning, Natalia Sanchez hit a line drive homerun over the center field fence to cut the lead to, 21. Taryn Golden struck out swinging for out number one and Alex Hernandez popped up to Sadie Garcia in foul territory in left field for out number two. Myli Hernandez struck out swinging to end the inning.
Jaylyn Gonzales and Millie Castillo hit back-to-back bleeders that fell in shallow center field to lead off the top of the third for Brownfield. Salas hit an RBI-single into the right field corner to extend the lead to, 3-1, leaving runners on the corners for the Lady Cubs. Salas took second on a pitch, before Brailee Franco hit a sacrifice fly to Mykenzie Price in left-center field, allowing Castillo to tag up and score from third, stretching the lead to, 4-1.
Martinez struck out swinging for out number two, but Brianne Franco hit an RBI-single up the middle to extend the lead to 5-1, before Priya Silva popped up to Natalia Sanchez on the left side to retire the side.
Both teams were kept quiet offensively until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Lady Cats came to the plate. Ray struck out swinging on a check swing for out number one, but Natalia Sanchez drew a walk to give Littlefield a runner. Golden struck out swinging for out number two.
Natalia Sanchez stole second on a throw down to first and took third on a throw down to second and scored on a throwing error by the catcher on the play to cut the lead to, 5-2. Alex Hernandez made it to first safely on a dropped third strike and she took second on a bad throw to first. Myli Hernandez struck out swinging to end the inning.
The score remained until the top of the sixth; Cadence Sanchez got Silva to strike out swinging for out number one and Jackie Castillo laid down a slap to Cadence Sanchez in the circle, who got the out at first for out number two. Brownfield used a pinch hitter, who doubled to right field on an error by Myli Hernandez to give them a base runner.
Gonzales hit an RBI-double to third on a throwing error to first by Golden, pushing their lead to, 6-2. Gonzales was picked off at third by Kaeleigh Logan to retire the side.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Ray beat out an infield single to Salas at shortstop and Natalia Sanchez double on an error by the right fielder on the diving attempt. Ray scored on a past ball, moving Natalia Sanchez to third and Natalia Sanchez scored on a bad throw down to third by the catcher to cut the lead to, 6-4.
Alex Hernandez singled to center field, but Arianna Cruz struck out looking and Lyric Rios struck out swinging to end the inning.
The Lady Cat defense kept the Lady Cubs off the board in the top of the seventh, and in the bottom half of the inning, Logan led things off with a homerun to center field to make it a one-run game, 6-5, before Price struck out swinging for out number one. Cadence Sanchez singled over shortstop, but Ray struck out swinging for out number two.
Cadence Sanchez took second on a past ball, before Natalia Sanchez drew a walk, putting the winning run on first. The runners took third and second on a ball away from the catcher on the third base side and the throw down to third went off the glove of the third baseman into left field, allowing two runs to score, as the Lady Cats took the walk-off victory over Brownfield, 7-6.
Cadence Sanchez pitched a complete game for the Lady Cats earning four strike outs, while giving up six runs and no walks.
The Lady Cats hosted Denver City on Saturday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday when they travel to Lamesa to take on the Lady Tornadoes.
First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
