The Sudan Hornets’ varsity baseball team won a thriller over the Springlake-Earth Wolverines on Monday in their home-opener, walking it off, 87.
Slade Beerwinkle got things going for the Wolverines in the top of the first inning, as he got a hit to fall in right- center field for a lead- off single, and Alex Alvarez laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by Jesus Salas on the mound and thrown to first for the out, as Beerwinkle advanced to second on the play.
Braden Bradley and Xavyer Mosqueda were both hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Wolverines, but Tyler Tanaro struck out looking for out number two. Froyland Agundiz drew an RBI- walk to put the Wolverines up, 1-0, before Tim Tovar struck out swinging to retire the side.
Mosqueda went right to work in the bottom half of the inning, getting Marcelo King and Trent Wilson both to strike out looking for two outs. Caleb Groetken singled off of the glove of Mosqueda on the mound to give Sudan their first base runner of the game, and he took second and third on pitches, before scoring on a past ball to tie the game, 1- 1.
Julian Salas singled to rightcenter field and took second on a past ball, but Jesus Salas grounded out to Beerwinkle at third to end the inning.
The Wolverines were kept quiet in the top of the second inning, but in the bottom half of the side, Angel Rosa drew a lead- off walk for the Hornets and he took second on a bobbled pitch by Tanaro behind the plate, before Derek Rosa reached first safely on a dropped third strike. Truett Kerby drew a walk to load the bases, but Sal Juarez struck out looking and King struck out swinging for out number two.
Wilson and Groetken drew RBI Walks to put the Hornets up, 3- 1, before Julian Salas flew out to Alvarez in center field to end the inning.
Mosqueda led off the top of the third inning for Springlake-Earth with a double to left field, before Tanaro popped up to King at second base for out number one. Agundiz and Tovar drew backto- back walks to load the bases and Donovan Stiggers knocked an RBI-single through the left side that was bobbled by Wilson in left- center field, putting the Wolverines back on top, 4- 3.
Luis Fuentes struck out swinging for out number two, but Beerwinkle drew a walk to give them two base runners. However, Alvarez struck out swinging to retire the side.
The Hornets were kept quiet in the bottom of the third inning, and in the top of the fourth for Springlake- Earth, Bradley singled over shortstop to lead things off. Mosqueda flew out to Wilson in center field for out number one and Tanaro flew out to Jason Bohler in right field for out number two.
Agundiz and Tovar drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, and Stiggers ripped a three-RBI single into the rightcenter field gap to extend the lead to, 7- 3, before Fuentes struck out looking to retire the side.
Juarez drew a walk to begin the bottom of he fourth inning, and King singled through the right side, moving King to third to put runners on the corners for Sudan. Wilson knocked a two-RBI double into the left- center field gap to cut the lead to, 7- 5. Wilson took third on a bad pick- off to second by Mosqueda and Groetken hit a shot to Beerwinkle at third and beat the throw to first, as it was dropped by Tovar. Wilson scored on the play, trimming the lead to, 7- 6.
Bradley relieved Mosqueda on the mound and Groetken took second and third on pitched, before Julian Salas drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Sudan. Jesus Salas drew a walk to load the bases and Groetken scored on a throw back to the pitcher to tie the game, 7-7.
Jon Conley drew a walk to reload the bases for the Hornets and Derek Rosa knocked an RBI-walk-off single to right field to win the game for Sudan, 8-7.
Jesus Salas pitched four innings for Sudan, giving up seven runs and seven walks, while earning six strikeouts.
Mosqueda pitched three innings for the Wolverines, giving up seven runs and six walks, while earning seven strikeouts. Bradley came on in relief duty for Springlake-Earth, giving up three walks and one run.
