Lady Cats throttle Bobbies, 60- 33, finish district play 12- 0
The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team capped off their district championship run on Tuesday night, as they finished the district season undefeated with a, 60-33, victory over the Dimmitt Bobbies.
With the win, the Lady Cats finish the regular season 21-9 overall, 12-0 in district play.
Arianna Cruz opened the scoring in the first quarter with a three from the right elbow, off of an assist from Edgemon, but Mariah Marmolejo answered with a jumper from the left elbow to make the score, 3-2, with 6:18 remaining in the opening quarter. Madison McNeese knocked down a jumper from the free-throw line, and on the defensive end, a block by Edgemon led to an easy fast-break lay-up for McNeese, stretching their lead to, 7-2.
Milee Thomas dropped in a putback for the Bobbies, but Edgemon scored a put-back off of her own miss, and Cruz followed it up with a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Kennadi Hanlin, stretching their lead to, 12-4, with 4:09 to play in the first quarter. Cruz was fouled on a putback attempt by Thomas and made one-of-two shots at the line extending their lead to, 13-4.
With 3:45 to play in the first quarter, Cruz was fouled on a put-back attempt by Caitlyn Olmos; she split the free throws, and Marmolejo responded with a lay-up on the left side off of an assist from K’mree Nino, trimming the lead to, 14-6. McNeese answered with back-to-back jumpers off of assists fromAmiah Elizondo and Hanlin, pushing their lead to, 18-6.
With 2:23 to play in the first, Nino knocked down a three form the left wing off of an assist from Na’Khiyah Porras and Porras followed it up with a lay-up in transition to cut the lead to, 18-11, with just over two minutes to play in the quarter. Jazmine Barrios buried a three from the left wing for the Lady Cats and Bri Valdez drained a three from the right wing off of the assist from Barrios, making the score, 24-11, as the first quarter came to a close.
Hanlin opened the second frame with a jumper from the right elbow and Kaeleigh Logan dropped in a layup in transition off of the assist from McNeese, making the score, 28-11. Edgemon dropped in a put-back off of her own miss, but Thomas got the Bobbies on the board in the second quarter with a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Porras, trimming the lead to, 30-13.
Marmolejo dropped in a lay-up in transition off of an assist from Porras, but Cruz was fouled on an attempt on the other end by Thomas, earning a trip to the line. She converted both free throws, and Edgemon followed it up with a three from the right elbow, as Dimmitt took a time out to talk things over, trailing the Lady Cats, 35-15.
Out of the break, Marmolejo dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Braylynn Chavira, but on the other end, Maerysa Saenz was fouled on a put-back attempt. She made one of two-shots at the line and Dimmitt closed out the quarter with a jumper from the left elbow by Marmolejo, trimming the lead to, 36-19, going into the locker room at halftime.
Edgemon knocked down a short jumper from the left wing off of an assist from Logan, but Nino answered with a three from the top of the key to make the score, 38-22. Cruz responded with a three of her own from the top of the key, and she followed it up with a jumper from the right elbow off of the assist from Hanlin to make the score, 43-22, with 5:05 remaining in the third. Olmos knocked down a jumper from the left elbow, but McNeese answered with a turnaround jumper from the right elbow off of an assist from Cruz to make the score, 45-24.
With under four minutes remaining in the quarter, McNeese picked up a steal from Porras in the back court and got it to Hanlin for a quick lay-up, extending their lead to, 47-24. Elizondo was fouled on a put-back attempt by Olmos and split the attempts at the line and on their next posession, Edgemon split a pair of free throws after being fouled by Erika Ontivero, making the score, 49-24.
Saenz drained a three from the right wing off of an assist from Valdez, but on the other end, Marmolejo was fouled on an attempt by Elizondo and split the free throws making the score, 52-25. With time winding down in the quarter, Barrios carved up the defense with a drive to the basket for a lay-up on the left side to close out the third quarter with the Lady Cats in control, 54-25.
Hanlin dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Edgemon to open the fourth quarter, but Porras answered with a three from the left elbow making the score, 56-28. With 5:41 remaining, McNeese was fouled on an attempt by Marmolejo; she converted both shots at the line to push their lead to, 58-28, as Dimmitt took a time out with 5:41 to play in the game.
Out of the break, Porras knocked down a three from the left elbow, but with 1:24 to play, Kamryn Meiwes picked up a steal and tossed the outlet pass to Barrios on the two-on-one break for a lay-up in transiton to stretch their lead to, 60-31. Marmolejo dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Olmos, as Littlefield went on to take the contest, 60-33.
Cruz led the Lady Cats in scoring with 15 points, and she was joined in double-figures scoring by McNeese, who tallied 12 points and Edgemon, who finished with 10 points. Barrios contributed seven points, while Hanlin added six points and Saenz chipped in four points.
Valdez tallied three points, while Logan added two points and Elizondo finished with one point in the contest.
The Lady Cats will take on Kermit on Monday in Seminole in the Class 3A Bi-district round of the play-offs.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
