The Sudan Nettes’ varsity basketball team throttled the Muleshoe Lady Mules at the Hornet’s Nest on Tuesday night, 77-19.
With the win, the Nettes improve to 7-7 overall on the year.
Stevi Lockhart opened the contest with a pull-up jumper from the left wing, as Muleshoe took a time out with 7:12 to play in the opening quarter. Out of the break, Landree Gonzales grabbed a steal and took it to the hoop for a fastbreak lay-up, making the score, 40. Lockhart followed it up with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Braelyn Pointer to extend their lead to, 7-0, as Muleshoe took another time out with 6:38 to play in the first quarter.
Out of the break, Lockhart knocked down a jumper from the left wing off of the assist from Gracyn Shultz and followed it up with a three from the top of the key off of the inbound pass from Edette Herrera, pushing their lead to, 12-0, with just under five minutes to play in the quarter.
With 3:34 remaining in the first quarter, Araceli Diaz was fouled on an attempt by Gonzales. She split the free throws to get the Lady Mules on the board, making the score, 12-1. Gonzales grabbed a defensive rebound and got it out to Lockhart, who heaved the outlet pass down court for Pointer, who finished off the play with a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Idaly Tarango. She converted the free throw to stretch their lead to, 15-1.
With 1:32 remaining in the quarter, Pointer dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Gonzales and Shultz followed it up with a layup, drawing an and-one foul on Tarango. She missed the free throw, but Sudan gathered the offensive rebound, as Shultz buried a three from the top of the key to extend their lead to, 22-1, as the first quarter came to a close.
Shultz opened the second frame with a lay-up off of the assist from Pointer, but Juliana Diaz answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Araceli Diaz to trim the lead to, 243, with 6:37 remaining in the first half. Shultz dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and- one foul on Kendra Kelley; this time she converted the free throw to push their lead to, 27-3.
Lockhart drove the left side looking for a lay-up, but she was fouled on the attempt by Araceli Diaz. She converted both free throws and Blessy Montes followed it up on their next possession with a three from the right wing off of the assist from Lockhart, stretching the lead to, 32-3, with just under five minutes to play in the first half.
With 3:47 to play in the half, Shultz was fouled on an attempt by Kylie Hernandez; she converted both free throws to push the lead to, 34-3. Shultz followed it up with a reverse lay-up off of the assist from Elaine Martinez, but Kelley answered with a jumper from the right wing, trimming the lead to, 36-5, with just under two minutes remaining in the half.
Gonzales converted a pair of free throws and Martinez followed it up with a three from the top of the key, off of the assist from Kambry Tolbert, stretching the lead to, 415, with 1:17 left in the half. Jaydaci Olivarez was fouled on an attempt by Gonzales and split the free throws, but with time winding down in the half, Lockhart was fouled on an attempt by Olivarez and she too split the free throws to push the Sudan lead to, 42-6, going into the locker room at halftime.
Lockhart hit Shultz on a backdoor cut for a lay-up to open the second half, but Araceli Diaz answered with a three from the left wing to trim the lead to, 44-9. Montes answered with a three from the left wing, off of the kick-out from Lockhart, but Muleshoe again answered, as Payton Otwell dropped in a lay-up to make the score, 4711, with 5:10 to play in the third quarter.
Shultz knocked down a turnaround jumper in the lane off of the assist from Lockhart, as Muleshoe took a time out to talk things over with 4:14 remaining in the third. Out of the break, Pointer took the ball to the hole for a layup on the left side, but Hernandez answered with a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Tarango to make the score, 51-14.
With just over two minutes remaining in the quarter, Shultz picked up a steal, taking it the other way for a fast-break lay-up and Martinez followed it up with another lay-up off a Lady Mules turnover to stretch their lead to, 55-14. Kelley and Gonzales exchanged threes and Gonzales and Lockhart scored back-to-back buckets to close out the third quarter with the Nettes in control, 6217.
Sudan opened the fourth quarter on a, 6-0, scoring run before Hernandez dropped in a lay-up off of a turnover to trim the lead to, 68-19. Sudan would close out the game on a, 9-0, scoring run to take the contest, 77-19.
Shultz led the Nettes in scoring with 19 points, to go along with three steals, two assists, one rebound and one block, while Lockhart tallied 15 points, six rebounds, five assists, three blocks and one steal, and Montes chipped in 11 points, five rebounds and one steal.
Gonzales tallied nine points, seven rebounds and five steals, while Pointer added nine points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Martinez tallied eight points, two steals and two rebounds.
Herrera tallied four points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Sanchez added two points, one rebound and one steal and Tolbert finished with seven rebounds, one assist and one block.
The Nettes squared off with 2A #2 Sundown on Friday on the road. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a road game against Lockney to open district play.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
