Fillies struggle on the road against Roughettes

The Olton Fillies’ varsity basketball team fell on the road on Tuesday to the Sundown Roughettes, 56- 19, in pre- district play.

With the loss, the Fillies fall to 0- 7 overall on the season.

The Roughettes held the Fillies scoreless in the first quarter, opening the game on a, 130 run going into the second quarter. With 6: 02 to play in the first half, Aspen Struve was fouled on the floor by Sundown, earning a one- inone opportunity at the line. She made the first shot, but missed the second, trimming the lead to, 13- 2.

Allie McCormick scored back-to-back buckets for Sundown and Natalie Urias followed it up with a jumper from the left elbow to stretch their lead to, 19- 2, with 5: 14 left to play in the half. Urias picked up a steal and got it ahead on the break, as Kaydence Loftin finished off the play with a layup to extend their lead to, 212, as Olton took a time out with 4: 28 to play in the half.

Out of the break, Olivia Cox was fouled on an attempt by Shea Beadles; she split the free throws to trim the lead to, 213. On the other end, Loftin was fouled on an attempt by Makenly Smith and she converted one- of- two free throws at the line to push their lead back out to, 22- 3, with just under four minutes to play in the half.

McCormick picked up a steal and went coast- to- coast for a lay- up, drawing an and- one foul on Cox. She converted the free throw, stretching their lead to, 25- 3. Struve responded with a lay-up for the Fillies and Kylee Noack followed it up with a lay-up off of a Sundown turnover to cut the lead to, 257, with just under two minutes remaining in the half.

Sundown dropped in a bucket to close out the half with the Roughettes in front of Olton, 27- 7, going into the locker room at halftime.

Hogan opened the second half with a lay- up, but Olton answered, as Smith banked in a jumper from the top of the key, making the score, 29- 9. Hogan again got to the basket for a lay- up and Urias followed it up with a three from the left elbow, pushing their lead to, 34- 9, with just under six minutes to play in the third quarter.

Loftin dropped in a lay- up off of the assist from Urias across the lane and Urias dropped a dime to McCormick on the next play for a lay- up, stretching their lead to, 38- 9, with 4: 43 to play in the quarter. Urias picked up a steal and got it ahead to Emma Holdman for the fast- break lay- up, but Olton answered on the other end with a bucket to trim the lead to, 40-11.

Sundown knocked down a jumper in the lane, but on the other end, Cox drove to the basket and kicked the ball out to Struve for a deep twopointer from the left corner, making the score, 42- 13. Sundown, though, would close out the first half with a lay- up to take a, 44- 13, lead into the final quarter of play.

Cox hit back- to- back threes in the fourth quarter for Olton, but the Fillies were outscored, 12- 6, in the quarter, en route to the, 56- 19, loss on the road. The Fillies will return to action on Tuesday with a home game against the Dimmitt Bobbies.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
