The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team went on the road and took down the Lockney Longhorns on Friday, 48-21, in district play.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 6-1 overall, 2-0 in district play.
The Hornets totaled 487 yards of offense, including 287 rushing yards and 200 passing yards, while holding Lockney to just 164 total yards.
In the first quarter, Sudan junior quarterback, Trent Wilson, connected with Sal Juarez for a 25-yard touchdown pass and Thys Danzeisen ran for the two-point conversion to put the Hornets in front, 8-0. Later in the quarter, Marcello King caught a 44-yard pass from Wilson for a touchdown and Juarez rushed for the two-point conversion to make the score, 16-0, heading into quarter number two.
Lockney would fire back in the second frame, rushing for a 12-yard touchdown to open the quarter and followed it up with a three-yard touchdown run. They wene one for two on the two-point conversion tries to cut the lead to, 16-14.
Sudan wasted no time responding, as Kaleb Robinson was on the receiving end of a 42-yard touchdown pass from Wilson. The PAT by Wilson was no good, leaving the score, 22-14. Sudan would score again to close out the first half, as Cervera rushed for a four-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good, leaving the score, 28-14, going into the locker room at halftime.
Out of the break, Alan Flores caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Wilson, who followed it up with the PAT to stretch their lead to, 35-14, to start the second half. Lockney would answer, as they punched in a one-yard touchdown run, followed with the PAT, trimming the lead back down to, 35-21. Wilson would score on a five-yard run for Sudan and nail the PAT, to extend their lead to, 42-21, heading into the final quarter of play.
Wilson would score again on a four-yard run in the fourth quarter to make the score, 48-21, as Sudan prevailed on the road over Lockney.
Wilson finished the game 13-20 passing for 200 yards and four touchdowns, while adding 14 carries for 86 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Cervera led the rushing attack with 12 carries for 137 yards and one touchdown, while King tallied nine carries for 64 yards.
Robinson had one catch for 42 yards and a score, while King tallied two catches for 41 yards and one touchdown, and Juarez added three catches for 34 yards and one touchdown. Alan Flores chipped in two catches for 34 yards and one touchdown, while Danzeisen added one catch for 22 yards.
Defensively, the Hornets hauled in two interceptions, recovered two fumbles and had a block. Drew Carr led the team with 20 total tackles, including three for loss, while Jaden Conley contributed 16 total tackles, including five for loss.
Jeremiah Castillo finished with 10 tackles, one for loss and Matthew Lopez added 10 tackles, one sack and two tackles for loss. Cervera tallied 11 tackles and Wilson finished with nine total tackles.
The Hornets will host Crosbyton on Friday as district play continues.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
