Olton Mustangs take down Dimmitt, 47-16

The Olton Mustangs’ varsity football team improved to 2- 0 on Friday with a, 47- 16, road victory over the Dimmitt Bobcats.

The Mustangs totaled 445 yards of offense; 241 passing yards and 204 rushing yards, while holding the Bobcats to just 121 total yards.

Olton had the ground game rolling early, as junior Christian Chancy, took a second down run, 13- yards for the touchdown to put the Mustangs up, 7- 0, after the PAT from senior, Logan Lassiter. Chancy would strike again later in the first quarter, as he broke loose on third down, up the middle for a 37-yard touchdown run to make the score, 14- 0, after the Lassiter PAT.

Dimmitt would strike back to close out the first quarter, as Daute Perez connected with Sabian Martinez for a 53- yard touchdown pass. Martinez converted the two- point conversion run to make the score, 14- 8, going into quarter number two.

In the second quarter, Chancy, on fourth and one, broke a tackle, making his way up the middle for a 30- yard touchdown run. The PAT by Lassiter was no good, leaving the score, 20-8. Dimmitt would answer before halftime, as Perez hit Gabriel Reyes for an eight- yard pass to make the score, 20- 16, after the twopoint conversion.

The Mustangs would come out and dominate the second half, as they started the third quarter with a 13- yard touchdown run by Lassiter, pushing their lead to, 26- 16, after the missed two- point conversion. Later in the third, Lassiter would hit Eric Valencia for a 33- yard touchdown strike to extend their lead to, 33- 16, after the PAT.

Lassiter would find senior, Jake Soliz on back- to- back touchdown strikes of 26-yards and 30 yards, to put the Mustangs up, 46- 16, after splitting the PAT’s.

Lassiter finished the game 19- 32 passing for 241 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, while also adding three carries for 17 yards and one touchdown.

Chancy led the rushing attack with 18 carries for 158 yards and three touchdowns, while Garcia tallied 11 carries for 25 yards.

In the receiving attack, Soliz  tallied seven catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns, while Valencia finished with one catch for 33 yards and one touchdown. Joel Olivas added six catches for 79 yards and Brennon Huguley finished with three catches for 17 yards. Defensively, Jacob Marquez led the team in total tackles with 11, while Damian Marquez tallied eigh tackles and Eddy Medrano and Alan Vasquez each finished with five tackles.

Medrano, Olivas and Jacob Escobar each hauled in an interception, while Jacob Marquez, Grady Roberts and Ozzy Rodriguez each recovered a fumble.

The Mustangs will be at home on Friday when they host the Texico Wolverines.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
