The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team held off the Olton Mustangs on Friday, 46-36, during the Summer Shootout basketball tournament, held at Wildcat Gym.
Nathan Urbina opened the contest with a three from the left wing, off of the assist from Andrew Martinez and Martinez followed it up with a steal from Ja’Den Williams, taking it the other way for a quick lay-up to make the score, 5-0. Littlefield took a time out to talk things over with 17:32 left to play in the first half, and out of the break, Chip Green buried a three from the right wing, off of the assist from MJ Randle, cutting the lead to, 5-3.
Jake Soliz answered with a three from the left wing for Olton, but Randle came right back on the next play, going coast-to-coast for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on the play to cut the lead to, 8-6, with 17:13 remaining in the half. Olton continued their barrage of threes, as Martinez buried another one from the left elbow, however, Littlefield had the answer, as Green came right back on the other end, knocking down a three from the right wing, off of the assist from Randle, making the score, 11-9.
Ian Mendez was fouled on an attempt with 14:12 left to play in the half; he converted the free throw to tie the game, 11-11, but on the next play, Joel Olivas picked up a steal from McCarty, taking it to the hoop for a quick lay-up to put Olton back in front, 13-11. On the other end, Major McNeese was fouled on an attempt and converted the free throw to knot the game, 13-13, with just under 12 minutes to play in the half.
Ryan Williams dropped in a floater for the Wildcats, picking up the andone foul on the play, making the score, 16-13. Martinez answered with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Adrian Reyna to tie the game, but it was short-lived, as Green drained a three from the left wing, off of the assist from Ryan Williams, pushing their lead back out to, 19-16.
Ryan Williams followed it up with a tear-drop from the left elbow, and Mendez kept the run going with a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from McNeese, stretching their lead to, 24-16, with 7:23 left to play in the half.
Omar Martinez took a charge on Brennon Huguley, but the Wildcats couldn’t capitalize on the turnover. Huguley responded on the offensive end with a tip-in off of a miss by Andrew Martinez, and followed it up on their next possession with a lay-up to cut the lead to, 24-20, with 4:10 remaining in the half. Jeremiah Trevino would miss a free throw in the closing second of the first half to send the Wildcats into halftime with a four-point advantage, 24-20.
Trevino opened the second half with a drive-and-dump to Ja’Den Williams for a lay-up, but Olton, answered as Soliz went coast-to-coast for a layup, making the score, 26-22. Huguley dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Solis, drawing an and-one foul on the play, cutting the lead to, one point, 26-25.
Green picked up a steal and took it to the hoop for a fast-break lay-up and Trevino followed it up with a three from the left elbow, making the score, 31-25, with 15:17 remaining in the game. Soliz knocked down a jumper from the left elbow for Olton to end the scoring run, but with 11:15 left to play, Huguley was fouled on a put-back attempt and converted the free throw to trim the lead to, 31-29.
Ryan Willams dropped in a putback off of his own miss, but Huguley answered with a jumper from the right wing, off of the assist from Olivas to make it a one-possession game, 33-31. The Wildcats buried a three and Ja’Den Williams followed it up with a lay-up off of the assist from Randle, before Huguley was fouled on an attempt by Ja’Den Williams with just over six minutes remaining in the contest. He converted the free throw to make the score, 38-33.
Ja’Den Williams dropped in a layup for Littlefield, and the Wildcats took a time out with 2:29 left to play. Out of the break, The Wildcats closed out the game on an, 8-3, scoring run to take the contest, 46-36.
