NETTES CELEBRATE SENIOR NIGHT WITH WIN OVER LOCKNEY, 14-4

The Sudan Nettes’ varsity softball team run ruled the Lockney Lady Horns, 14-4, in six innings on Tuesday night to celebrate senior night with a victory.

With the win, the Nettes improve to 6-8 overall, 4-7 in district play.

Both teams went scoreless through the first inning, but Lockney got things going in the top of the second, as Karen Trenado was hit by a pitch to lead things off. She took second on a pitch, before Mariah Ascencio hit a grounder to Aspen Cantu at second base, who got the out at first, as Trenado advanced to third on the play with one out.

Mianette Rubio was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners for Lockney. Rubio took second on a pitch, before Thalia Ascencio hit a sacrifice fly ball to Hailey Flores in left field for out number two, however Trenado was able to tag up and score from third to put the Lady Horns in front, 1-0. Brinley Lefevre ripped an RBI-triple down the third-base line to extend their lead to, 2-0, before Blessy Montes got Anyaleigh Tambunga to fly out to Kinley Coker in right field to retire the side.

The Nettes would answer in the bottom half of the side, as Gracyn Shultz popped up to second base, but the ball was dropped by Lefevre to give the Nettes a base runner. Shultz took second on a pitch, before Cantu drew a walk to put two runners on for Sudan. Coker hit an RBI-single into rightcenter field, to score Shultz and move Cantu over to third, cutting the lead to, 2-1.

Coker took second on a past ball and Angie Thorn hit an RBI single up the middle, moving Coker over to third with the game now tied, 2- 2. Angie Thorn took second on a pitch, before Edette Herrera hit a grounded to the shortstop, but the throw to first was dropped by Rubio at first base, as another run scored on the play, making the score, 3-2.

Elora Thorn knocked a two-RBI triple into left field that was misplayed by Tambunga, pushing the Sudan lead to, 5-2. Flores fol lowed it up with an RBI-triple into center field that got by Mariah Ascencio, making the score, 6-2. Lizseth Sital drew a walk and took second on a pitch, before Shultz roped a two-RBI double over the left side to extend their lead to, 8- 2.

Montes hit a sacrifice grounder to third, as Thalia Ascencio threw to first for the out, as Shultz advanced to third on the play with two outs. Cantu drew a walk, but Coker popped up Lefevre at second base to end the inning.

A pitcher’s duel went on through the third and fourth innings, with neither team able to push a run across. But, in the top of the fifth inning Chavira reached base on dropped pop up at second base by Cantu and Hernandez singled through the left side to put two runners on for the Lady Horns. Trenado popped up to Cantu in shallow right field for out number one, but the runners advanced on the play.

Mariah Ascencio hit a shot into right field that was fielded by Coker, who fired into Montes, who then fired the relay home to Shultz for an out at the plate, after one run scored, making the score, 8-3, with two outs. Rubio was hit by a pitch, but Montes recovered in the circle, as she got Taliah Ascencio to strike out to retire the side.

The Nettes were kept quiet in the bottom half of the fifth and in the top of the sixth inning, Montes got Lefevre to fly out to Flores in shallow left field for out number one. Tambunga had a fly ball fall on the first-base line and Cuellar singled on an error by Herrera at shortstop, putting runners on the corners for Lockney. Chavira hit into a fielder’s choice to Cantu at second base, who tried to get the force out at second, but the toss was dropped by Herrera, as a run scored to cut the lead to, 8-4.

The Nettes’ defense would bounce back, as they got Hernandez to ground into a fielder’s choice and got Trenado to ground out to Sital at third base to retire the side.

Trenado relieved Chavira in the circle to begin the bottom of the sixth inning, and after Shultz struck out swinigng for out number one, Montes drew a walk to give the Nettes a runner. Cantu struck out for out number to, but Coker drew a walk to put runners on first and second for Sudan.

Angie Thorn hit an RBI-single into right field, moving Coker over to third with the score stretched to, 9-4. Herrera followed it up with a two-RBI double into left field to make the score, 11-4. Herrera took third on a past ball, before Elora Thorn drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Sudan. Elora Thorn took second on a pith, before Flores walked to load the bases, bringing Chavira back to the circle in place of Trenado for Lockney.

Sital would blast a three-RBI walk-off single up the middle to end the game, as Sudan run ruled Lockney, 14-4.

Blessy Montes pitched a complete game for the Nettes, earning three strikeouts, while giving up six walks and four runs.

The Nettes were at Lockney on Saturday to conclude their season. Results were not available at press time.
