LADY CATS SLAY LADY CUBS, 10-6

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softball team picked up a huge win on the road on Tuesday over the Brownfield Lady Cubs, 10-6, moving them into a tie for second place in the district standings.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 11-7 overall, 4-3 in district play.

MyKenzie Price opened the first inning with a double over Jalen Franco in right field and Cadence Sanchez was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for Littlefield. Brookelyn Gau hit an RBI-single up the middle on an error by Sadie Garcia at second base, making the score, 1-0.

However, the next three batters would go down in order, as Katelyn Gau grounded out to Brianne Franco in the circle, Natalia Sanchez struck out swinging and Alex Tenorio struck out looking to retire the side.

Brookelyn Gau and the Lady Cat defense got two quick outs on the Lady Cubs in the bottom half of the side, as Ashley Ramirez lined out to Julie Rodriguez at second base and Millie Castillo grounded out to Rodriguez at second base. Kenley Salas reached base on a dropped third strike that got past Kaeleigh Logan behind the plate to give Brownfield a runner, but Brianne Franco hit a grounder to Tenorio at third, who threw to first for the out to end the inning.

Both teams went scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. Millie Castillo grounded out to Cadence Sanchez at first base and Salas grounded out to Taryn Golden at third base for out number two, but Brianne Franco singled to right field and took second on a past ball, before Nazalyn Arenas drew a walk putting two runners on for the Lady Cubs.

McKenzye Perez hit a two-RBI single to shallow center field to give the Lady Cubs their first lead of the game, 2-1. Brookelyn Gau would recover in the circle, as she got Jackie Castillo to ground out to Cadence Sanchez at first base to end the inning.

Katelyn Gau singled on an error by Garcia at second base to give the Lady Cats a runner in the top of the fourth inning. Natalia Sanchez singled to center field and Alex Hernandez followed it up with a single through the right side to load the bases. Katelyn Gau scored on a past ball and Natalia Sanchez scored on a bad throw to the plate by Ramirez, putting the Lady Cats back in front, 3-2, with a runner on third.

Torres knocked an RBI-double over first base to extend their lead to, 4-2, but Golden chopped out to the pitcher, Logan struck out swinging for two outs. Torres scored on a past ball to make the score, 5-2, and Price drew a walk to give the Lady Cats another base runner. Cadence Sanchez was hit by a pitch and Brookelyn Gau drew a walk to load the bases for Littlefield, but Katelyn Gau struck out swinging to retire the side.

Brookelyn Gau and the Lady Cat defense kept the Lady Cubs quiet in the bottom of the fourth and the offense went back to work in the top of the fifth inning, as Natalia Sanchez led things off with a single over second base. Hernandez struck out swinging for out number one, but Torres doubled over first, moving Natalia Sanchez over to third on the play. Golden followed it up with an RBIsingle on an error by Salas at shortstop, making the score, 6-2.

Logan hit an RBI-single into left field, moving Golden over to third, as they stretched the lead to, 7-2. Arianna Cruz came on as the courtesy runner for the catcher. Price was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Littlefield and Cadence Sanchez hit a sacrifice grounder to Perez at third, who got the out at first, as Golden scored to make the score, 8-2.

Brookelyn Gau grounded out to second to end the inning, but not before the Lady Cats were able to add some insurance runs.

Brownfield cut into the lead with a four run bottom of the sixth inning, but in the top of the seventh, the Lady Cats added two runs on RBI’s from Price and Brookelyn Gau to make the score, 10-6. The defense would shut the Lady Cubs down in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the con test and split the season series.

Brookelyn Gau pitched a complete game for the Lady Cats, giving up six runs and three walks, while striking out nine batters.

The Lady Cats hosted Denver City on Friday for senior day and will close out the regular season next Saturday with a road game at Muleshoe.

First-pitch is scheduled for noon.
