The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softball team couldn’t get the offense going, as they fell to Lamesa in their district-opener on Thursday, as they fell to the Lady Tornadoes, 17-0.
With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 7-5 overall, 0-1 in district play.
Lex singled up the middle to open the first inning for Lamesa, and Laila doubled to left-center field to put two runners on for Lamesa. Amaya hit a sacrifice grounder to Julie Rodriguez at second base, who got the out at first, as the run scored and Laila advanced to third. Jadeyn struck out swinging for out number two, but Zoey hit an RBI-single up the middle to make the score, 2-0. Zoey took second and third on
Zoey took second and third on past balls, before Emily drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Lamesa. Kayleigh roped a two-RBI double into left-center field to extend their lead to, 4-0, before Layla grounded out to Natalia Sanchez at shortstop to retire the side.
The Lady Cats couldn’t get anything going in the bottom half of the side, as Natalia Sanchez struck out looking, Cadence Sanchez struck out swinging and Brookelyn Gau struck out looking to end the inning.
Aligah opened the second inning with a single up the middle and Lex laid down a bunt that was fielded by Brookelyn Gau, but the throw to first went off of the glove of Cadence Sanchez at first base, allowing a run to score, making the score, 5-0, as Lex advanced to second on the play. Laila struck out swinging for out number one, but Amaya belted a two-run homerun over the left-field fence, pushing their lead to, 7-0.
Jadeyn flew out to Tricia Torres in right-center field for out number two, but Zoey tripled on a fly ball to center field that was missed on a diving try by Torres. Emily followed it up with a two-run home run to left field to extend their lead to, 9-0. Brookelyn Gau would get Kayleigh to pop up to Rodriguez in shallow right field to retire the side.
The Lady Cats’ offensive woes
continued, as Katelyn Gau, MyKenzie Price and Torres each went down swinging to end the inning.
Lamesa added five runs in the top of the third inning, one run in the top of the fourth inning and two runs in the top of the fifth in ning to make the score, 17-0, heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Katelyn Gau struck out swinging to begin the bottom half of the fifth, but Price singled past second to break up the no-hitter and give the Lady Cats a base runner. Torres singled to center field on an error, but Rodriguez struck out looking and Alex Hernandez struck out swinging to end the game.
Brookelyn Gau started in the circle for the Lady Cats pitching three innings, giving up 14 runs and one walk, while earning two strikeouts. Natalia Sanchez pitched two innings, giving up three runs, while earning one strikeout.
The Lady Cats continued district play on Saturday as they hosted the Brownfield Lady Cubs. Results were not available at press time. They will continue district play on Tuesday with a road game against Denver City.
First-pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
