Lady Wolverines dominate All-District post-season awards

The Lady Wolverines’ varsity basketball team dominated the All-District awards after going three rounds deep in the play-offs this year, before falling to #3 Nazareth in the 1A Regional Quarterfinal.

Senior, Sayler Beerwinkle, was named the MVP for District 4-1A, while junior, Halee Toscano was the District’s Offensive MVP. Sophomore, Taytum Goodman, earned the District’s Defensive MVP Award.

“Sayler has been our go to girl,” Head Coach Jeri Been Goodman said. “This is her second year to be the District MVP, I think she would have got it her sophomore year too if she wouldn’t have broke her leg. She finished her high school career with 1,594 points and she didn’t play half her sophomore year. She had 222 rebounds, 84 steals, 72 assists this year.”

She added, “Halee has been playing with a lot of knee pain but continued being an offensive threat by her shooting and penetrating. She joined the 1,000 point club this year, finishing with 1,040 career high school points. She had 180 rebounds, 78 steals, and 65 assists. We’re looking forward to see what she does her senior year. Taytum is all over the place offensively and defensively. She’s our energizer bunny setting the pace for our team. She makes our transition game happen. I don’t know how with her size but she ended the season with 110 rebounds and 90 of those were on defense. She was just shy of 100 steals and had 140 assists.”

Sydney Furr, Emma Samaron and Mahalia Delgado were All-District selections.

“Sydney is one of those quiet but deadly girls, you don’t realize how much she gets done until you re-watch film or see the stats. She had 36 steals and 98 rebounds on the season. Her defense is what really stood out this year, sometimes guarding posts that were four or five inches taller. She was just a solid player.”

She added, “Emma lead the team in free-throw percentages with 67%. She and Jasmine took turns being the first subs off the bench. Emma started seeing openings toward the end of our season that helped our team tremendously. She will be our only true post returning next year and I’m expecting great things from her.”

Jasmine Garcia earned Honorable Mention.

“Jasmine came in and got some quality time this year,” she said. “She was on JV at the first of the season, I needed her when we had some girls out with Covid and I never put her back down on JV. She stepped up and made some big shots in some big games. She really stepped up her defense in the playoffs.”

Coach Goodman was named the Coach of the year for the district.
