Mustangs take down Skyrockets, 71-54, for Area title

The Olton Mustangs’ varsity basketball team handled business against the Wellington, as they knocked the Skyrockets out of the play-offs with a, 71-54, victory at Levelland High School to claim the 2A Area Championship.

With the win, the Mustangs are 31-3 overall on the season.

It was a tight game early on, as Olton held a three-point lead, 23- 20, at the end of the first quarter. The Mustangs outscored the Skyrockets, 16-14, in the second frame to take a, 39-34, lead into the locker room at halftime.

Olton was able to pull away in the second half, as they outscored Wellington, 17-9, in the third quarter and 15-11, in the final frame to take the contest, 71-54.

Chris Urbina led the Mustangs in scoring with 16 points, as oneof-five players in double-figures scoring for Olton. Jake Soliz tallied 13 points, while Brennon Huguley added 11 points and Alex Santillan and Nathan Urbina each finished with 10 points.

Andrew Martinez added seven points, while Joe Canchola and Adrian Reyna each finished with two points in the contest.

The Mustangs traveled to the Tiger Pit at Frenship High School on Tuesday to take on New Deal in the 2A Regional Quarterfinal round of the Play-offs. Results were not available at press time.
