NETTES STUMBLE AGAINST NEW HOME IN REG. QUARTERFINAL

The Sudan Nettes’ varsity basketball team’s season came to a close on Tuesday night in Levelland, as they fell to the New Home Lady Leopards, 71- 58

Ċarley Smith buried a three from the left elbow to open the first quarter for New Home and Addy Burns drained a three from the top of the key to put the Lady Leopards up, 6-0, with just under seven minutes gone in the opening quarter. Addison Boehning scored a put-back off of a miss by Stevi Lockhart to get the Nettes on the board and she followed it up with a steal, taking it to the basket for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Abi Cathey. She converted the free throw to make it a one-point game, 6- 5.

New Home took a time out with 2:59 remaining in the first quarter, and out of the break, Lockhart dropped in a lay-up, off of the assist from Elaine Martinez, giving Sudan their first lead of the game, 7-6. Kelby Baccus was fouled on a put-back attempt by Sydney Cornelius. She made one-of-two shots to tie the game, 7-7.

With 1:08 remaining in the first quarter, Gracyn Shultz drained a three from the top of the key, off of the assist rom Braelyn Pointer, as the Nettes regained the lead, 10-7. McKenzie Johnston dropped in a lay-up on the left side for New Home, but Boehning drove the right side of the basket for a lay-up, making the score, 12-9. Addie Stewart dropped in a lay-up to close out the quarter for New Home, as they trailed Sudan, 12-11, going into quarter number two.

Shultz opened the second quarter with a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Lockhart and Boehning picked up a steal and got the outlet pass ahead to Shultz for a lay-up in transition, pushing their lead to, 17-11. Johnston knocked down a transition three to cut the lead to, 17-14, but Liz Sital answered with a bucket for Sudan and Boehning dropped in a lay-up, off of an assist from Landree Gonzales, making the score, 21-14.

With 5:35 remaining in the first half, Sital drained a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Boehning, pushing their lead to double-digits, 24- 14

Ṅew Home took a time out with 5:33 remaining in the half, and out of the break, Lockhart knocked down a turnaround jumper from the right wing, off of the assist from Riley Edens, making the score, 26-14. Lockhart followed it up with a three from the top of the key, as Sudan took a time out, leading the Lady Leopards, 29-14, with 4:15 left to play in the half.

Out of the break, Burns dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Pointer. She converted the free throw and she was fouled again on their next possession by Lockhart. She knocked down both free throws to cut the lead to 10 points, 29-19, and it was cut to single digits on the next play, as Stewart picked up a steal in their own end and dropped it in for a lay-up, making the score, 29-21.

With 2:21 remaining in the half, Lockhart pulled up for a jumper from the left elbow and Pointer took a charge on Burns, giving them an extra possession with 2:07 remaining in the half. Boehning drew a block on Stewart and knocked down both free throws to stretch their lead to, 33-21. Burns dropped in a layup off of an assist from Smith, but Lockhart answered with a fadeaway from the right side, drawing an and-one foul on Smith. She knocked down the free throw to make the score, 36-23.

With under one minute to play in the half, Boehning picked up a steal and took it to the hoop for a fast-break layup, but the Lady Leopards answered with a bucket and Burns was fouled on an attempt by Sital. She split the attempts at the line, making the score, 36-26, but with time winding down in the half, Boehning was fouled on a third-chance try and split the free throws to send the Nettes into halftime in front of New Home, 39-26.

New Home opened the second half on a, 13-0, scoring run, before Sudan took a time out with 5:59 remaining in the third quarter. Out of the break, Boehning drove the lane and kicked the ball out to Lockhart, who knocked down a three from the left wing to make the score, 42-39. New Home would tie the game, as Johnston knocked down a three from the left wing, but Sudan responded quickly, as Pointer buried a three from the right wing to push their lead to, 45-42.

New Home again went on a, 10-0 scoring run, before Lockhart dropped in a runner in the lane to trim the New Home lead to, 52-47, with 1:38 remaining in the quarter. With under one minute to play in the quarter, Cathey dropped in a third-chance lay-up, making the score, 54-47, heading into the final quarter of play.

Boehning opened the fourth quarter with a put-back off of a miss by Shultz, but Cathey answered with a lay-up, off of the assist from Smith, making the score, 56-49. Burns dropped in a lay-up for New Home, but Lockhart answered with a floater in the lane, off of the assist from Boehning, a New Home took a time out, leading Sudan, 58-51.

Out of the break, Lockhart knocked down a pull-up jumper from the left elbow, but Burns answered with a lay-up and followed it up with a three from the left wing, pushing their lead to, 63-53, with 3:45 remaining in the game. Sital dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Lockhart, drawing an and-one on Baccus. She converted the free throw to make the score, 56-63.

New Home went on to close out the game on an, 8-2, scoring run, as Sudan fell to New Home, 71-58.

Lockhart led the Nettes in scoring with 23 points, eight rebounds and one assist, while Boehning posted a doubledouble with 16 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with six steals and four assists. Shultz tallied eight points, two rebounds and two assists, while Sital chipped in six points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal, and Pointer contributed five points, six rebounds and two assists.

Riley Edens added three steals, two blocks, one rebound and one assist, while Elaine Martinez finished with one assist in the contest.
