The Springlake-Earth Lady Wolverines’ varsity basketball team claimed the Class 1A Bi-district trophy on Tuesday at Friona High School with a, 49-29, victory over Wildorado.
With the win the Lady Wolverines improved to 22-7 overall on the season.
Halee Toscano opened the contest with a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Mahalia Delgado, but on the other end, Kyndall Ragland was fouled on an attempt by Sayler Beerwinkle. She converted one-of-two shots at the line, making the score, 3-1.
With 5:31 remaining in the opening quarter, Beerwinkle was fouled on a put-back attempt by Falon Rendon. She made one-of-two shots at the line to extend their lead to, 4-1. On their next possession, Beerwinkle was fouled on a put-back attempt by Ragland. She again split the free throws to make the score, 5-1, with just over five minutes to play in the first quarter.
Toscano kept the run going with a three from the left elbow, off of the assist from Taytum Goodman, as Wildorado took a time out with 4:23 left to play in the quarter, trailing the Lady Wolverines, 8-1. Out of the break, Sydney Furr picked up a steal and got it to Goodman, who hit Toscano for a lay-up, pushing their lead to, 10-1. With just over four minutes remaining in the quarter, Goodman was fouled on an attempt by Rendon; she split the free throws to make the score, 11-1.
Ragland dropped in a lay-up for to stop the scoring drought for Wildorado, however Goodman answered with a steal for a fastbreak lay-up and Beerwinkle followed it up with a jumper in the lane, off of the inbound pass from Goodman, stretching their lead to, 15-3. In the closing seconds of the quarter, Carson Fuller dropped in a lay-up to trim the lead to, 15-5, heading into quarter number two.
Goodman opened the second quarter with a drive and dump to Beerwinkle, who dropped in a layup to push their lead back out to, 17-5, with 5:52 remaining in the first half. Ragland was fouled on an attempt by Beerwinkle and sank both free throws to cut the lead to 10 points, 17-7. Wildorado took a time out with 5:26 remaining in the half. Out of the break, Jovi Perkins dropped in a lay-up, before Springlake-Earth took a time out with 4:37 left to play in the half.
Out of the break, Reyna Segovia dropped in a lay-up and Madison Clark buried a three from the left elbow, off of an assist from Perkins, slicing the lead to, 17-14, with 3:21 remaining in the half. The Lady Wolverines would bounce back in a big way to close out the final 2:48 to play in the first half, as Beerwinkle picked up a steal, getting it ahead to Goodman in transition for a lay-up to extend their lead to, 19-14.
Beerwinkle dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Furr and she followed it up with a put-back off of her own miss to stretch their lead back out to, 23-14, with 2:11 remaining in the second quarter. Furr dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Goodman and Goodman was fouled on their next possession by Fuller, earning a trip to the line. She split the free throws to make the score, 26-14. Furr closed out the first half with a layup, off of the assist from Beerwinkle to make the score, 28-14, going into the locker room at halftime.
Ragland dropped in a lay-up to open the third quarter, but Toscano answered with a floater in the lane to stretch their lead to, 30-16. With 4:50 remaining in the third quarter, Ragland knocked down a jumper from the left elbow and she followed it up with a layup to cut the lead to 10 points, but Toscano quickly answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Emma Samaron to make the score, 32-20, with just under four minutes to play in the game.
Ragland was fouled on an attempt by Delgado and converted both attempts at the line to cut the lead to, 32-22. Both teams took a time out, and out of the break, Brooke Trayler dropped in a layup, but in the closing seconds of the quarter, Toscano knocked down a jumper from the left wing to make it a 10-point Lady Wolverine lead, 34-24, going into the final quarter of play.
Goodman forced a five-second call on Perkins to open the fourth quarter, and Beerwinkle followed it up with a put-back off of her own miss to stretch their lead to, 36-24. Clark hit Ragland in transition for a lay-up, but Goodman answered on the other end with a lay-up of her own to make the score, 38-26, with 5:14 left to play in the game.
Toscano dropped in a lay-up and Goodman knocked down a deep three from the left elbow, off of the assist from Toscano, making the score, 43-26, as Wildorado took a time out to talk things over with 4:03 left to play in the game. After a scoreless two minutes, the Lady Wolverines took a time out with 2:21 remaining, and out of the break, Furr dropped in a lay-up to push their lead to, 45-26.
With under two minutes to play, Goodman was fouled on the floor by Eva Albracht and made both shots of the one-in-one opportunity to make the score, 47-26. Beerwinkle dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Goodman, and Wildorado answered with three consecutive points to close out the game, as Springlake-Earth took the contest, 49-29.
Toscano led the team in scoring with 16 points, while Beerwinkle chipped in 14 points and Goodman finished with 13 points. Furr finished with six points in the contest.
The Lady Wolverines played Silverton on Friday at Canyon High School in the Area Round of the Play-offs. Results were not available at press time.
