WIldcats blast Mules on senior night, 73-30

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team would not be denied on senior night as they took down the Muleshoe Mules, 73-30.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 11-16 overall, 5-5 in district play.

The Wildcats came out on fire in the first quarter, after a three by Irvin Torres, Jaron Cabello pulled up for a jumper from the left elbow and he followed it up with a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Ethan Garcia, making the score, 5-3, with 6:49 remaining in the opening quarter.

Sebastian Kirven dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Brennan Davis, but Jordan Trevino drained a three from the top of the key, off of the assist from Garcia, and Cabello followed it up with another three from the left wing, off of the assist from Garcia, pushing their lead to, 11-5, with 4:38 left to play in the first quarter.

Muleshoe took a time out and out of the break, David dropped in a lay-up, but Tyrell Norman answered on the other end for Littlefield with a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Cabello to stretch their lead to, 13-7. Cabello tipped in a miss by Chip Green., but Kirven dropped in a put-back for Muleshoe, stopping the run for Littlefield, making the score, 15-9.

Norman scored another lay-up off of an inbound play and Omar Martinez hit Green in transition for a lay-up, extending their lead to, 19-9. Jordan Trevino drove the lane, dumping the ball off to Green for a lay-up and Cabello followed it up by going coast-to-coast for a lay-up, as the Mules took a time out trailing the Wildcats, 23-9.

Out of the break, Elijah Salazar hit a cutting Martinez for a lay-up, but Tate Shipman answered with a lay-up on the other end to trim the lead to 25-11. However, with time winding down in the quarter, MJ Randle drained a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Green to extend their lead to, 28-11, as the first quarter came to a close.

Salazar went back door to Norman for a lay-up to open the second quarter and Randle followed it up with a steal that led to a quick lay-up, pushing their lead to, 32-11, with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half. Norman scored back-to-back layups for the Wildcats and Ryan West took a charge on Adam Alarcon, before Jordan Trevino buried a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Cabello, pushing their lead to, 39-11.

Davis dropped in a lay-up to get the Mules on the board in the second quarter, but Ty’Jae Chambers responded with a lay-up off o the assist from Jordan Trevino, making the score, 41-13.Victor Morales knocked down a jumper from the right wing, but with 2:04 left to play in the half, Norman split a pair of free throws to stretch their lead to, 42-15.

Kirven was fouled on the other end by Jordan Trevino and split the attempts, trimming the lead to, 42-16. Littlefield took a time out with 1:12 left to play in the half to prevent a jumpball and out of the break, Salazar passed the ball into Green, who sent a touch pass to Norman for a lay-up, making the score, 44-16.

Morales answered with a layup for the Mules, but Green scored on a third-chance bucket and Martinez beat the buzzer with a layup in transition to make the score, 48-18, going into the locker room at halftime.

West opened the second half with a lay-up for the Wildcats, but Davis answered with a lay-up, off of an assist from Torres, making the score, 50-20. Cabello knocked down a quick jumper in the lane, but Torres answered with a jumper from the free-throw line to make the score, 52-22.

With 5:36 remaining in the third quarter, Jordan Trevino was fouled on an attempt by Torres. He split the attempts at the line and Kirven answered on the other end with a lay-up off of the assist from Jeremiah Barron, trimming the lead to, 53-24. Green buried a three from the right wing off of the assist from Randle, and Norman took a charge on Shipman to close out the third quarter with the Wildcats in front, 56-24.

Cabello hit Jordan Trevino with an outlet pass for a lay-up to open the fourth quarter and Cabello followed it up with a three from the left elbow, off of the assist from Garcia, pushing their lead to, 61-24. Torres responded with a three of his own from the left elbow, but Cabello came right back with a bomb from the left elbow to make the score, 64-27, with just over five minutes remaining in the game.

Norman went up and under the basket for a lay-up, off of the assist from Salazar and Martinez followed it up with a lay-up, making the score, 68-27, before Littlefield took a time out with 2:49 left to play in the game. Norman picked up a steal and was fouled on the fast-break by Dok Gardner. He converted both free throws to extend their lead to, 70-27.

Abraham Mendoza knocked down a jumper in the lane for the Mules, but Chambers answered with a three from the right elbow that ignited the crowd, off of the assist from Jordan Trevino, making the score, 73-29. Mendoza split a pair of free throws to close out the game, as Littlefield took the contest, 73-30.

Cabello led the team in scoring with a game-high 20 points, and he was joined in double-figures scoring by Norman, who tallied 17 points. Jordan Trevino and Green each chipped in nine points, while Martinez contributed six points, Chambers and Randle each added five points and West finished with two points in the contest.

The Wildcats were at Lamesa on Friday for a big game with the Golden Tornadoes. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a big game at Denver City.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
