The Olton Mustangs’ varsity basketball team used a second-half surge on Friday to survive a scare at home against Vega, 48-39.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 24-3 overall, 5-0 in district play.
Vega outscored the Mustangs, 10-9, in the first quarter and added 16 points in the second frame to lead Olton, 26-15, going into the locker room at halftime.
But, in the second half, Olton outscored the Longhorns, 15-6, to cut the lead to, 32-30, heading into the final quarter of play. In the fourth quarter, Olton outscored Vega, 18-7, to take the contest, 48-39.
Andrew Martinez led the team in scoring with 14 points and he was joined in double-figures scoring by Chris Urbina, who tallied 13 points. Nathan Urbina and Alex Santillan each contributed seven points, while Nathan Urbina added three points and Joe Canchola and Jake Soliz each finished with two points.
The Mustangs were at Boys Ranch on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will have a showdown on Friday at Farwell that has district title, as well as play-off seeding implications on the line.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
