LADY CATS WIN SECOND MEETING WITH BOBBIES, 35-18

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team defeated the Dimmitt Bobbies on the road on Tuesday, 35-18, in their second meeting of the season.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 18-9 overall, 6-2 in district play.

Mahalia Huey got the game going with a lay-up on the right side, off of an assist from Kennadi Hanlin, making the score, 2-0, with 5:45 remaining in the opening quarter. Dimmitt tied things up with a lay-up by Sara Loeza, but a few plays later, Hanlin got the outlet pass to Bri Valdez, who was fouled on an attempt by Kriselle Ramirez. She made the first shot, but a lane violation on the second shot left the score, 3-2, with 1:21 remaining in the first quarter.

With under one minute to play, Ramirez was fouled on an attempt by Arianna Cruz. She split the free throws and the Bobbies were able to gather the offensive rebound with the game tied, 3-3. The first quarter would come to a close with the game tied, 3-3.

With just over one minute gone in the second frame, The Bobbies went to the free-throw line and converted a pair of free throws to put them in front, 5-4, but on the other end Hanlin and Cruz went to the free-throw line on back-to-back possessions with both players splitting a pair of free throws to tie the game, 5-5.

Littlefield followed it up with a bucket to take the lead, 7-5, as Dimmitt took a time out to talk things over with 5:02 remaining in the first half. Out of the break, Cruz was fouled on an attempt by Ramirez. She split the free throws, stretching their lead to, 8-5.

With 3:41 left to play in the first half, Jazmine Barios picked up as teal and got it ahead to Hanlin, who was fouled on the fast-break attempt by Na’khiyah Porras. She split the free throws, pushing their lead to, 9-5. On the other end, Loeza was fouled on an attempt by Huey and split the free throws to trim the lead to, 9-6.

Hanlin banked in a three from the left elbow and Cruz followed it up with a three from the right wing to close out the half with the Lady Cats in front, 15-6.

Hanlin opened the third quarter with a three and with 2:53 left to play in the third quarter, Barios was fouled on an attempt by Caitlyn Olmos. She made one-of-two shots from the free-throw line and followed it up with a lay-up on the left baseline to stretch their lead to, 21-6.

With 1:14 left to play in the third, Hanlin drove the left side for a layup, but Dimmitt answered with a lay-up in transition to make the score, 23-8. With under one minute to play in the quarter, Valdez dished the ball to Brookelyn Gau for a lay-up and then the defense forced a 10-second call to regain possession with 11.9 seconds remaining in the quarter.

In the closing seconds, Valdez was fouled on an attempt by Haylee Melendez. She split the free throws to make the score, 26- 8, going into the final quarter of play.

Milee Thomas dropped in a layup for Dimmitt to open the fourth quarter, but Cruz answered with a three from the right elbow, pushing their lead back out to, 29-10. With 5:37 remaining, Hanlin was fouled on an attempt by Kaylee Lujan. Hanlin was injured on the play, forcing Barios to shoot the free throws for Hanlin. She made one-of-two shots at the line to make the score, 30-10.

Thomas was fouled on a second-chance shot by Ashtyn Parker with four minutes left to play in the game. She split the free throws to make the score, 30-11, but on the other end, Parker was fouled on the floor by Thomas, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She made the first shot and missed the second, extending their lead back out to, 31-11.

Littlefield took a time out with 2:51 left to play in the game, and out of the break, Thomas was fouled on a rebound by Huey, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She made one-of-two shots at the line, making the score, 31-12, with 2:42 left to play in the game.

Littlefield’s defense forced a five-second call on the inbound play with 2:28 remaining in the contest and Cruz was fouled on back-to-back plays and made all four free throws to stretch their lead to, 35- 12, but Dimmitt answered with three consecutive lay-ups to make the score, 35-18, as Littlefield went on to take the contest on the road.

Hanlin led the team in scoring with 12 points, to go along with three rebounds, two steals and one assist, while Cruz tallied 12 points, two rebounds and one steal, and Barios chipped in four points, three steals, one rebound and one assist.

Gau contributed two points, seven steals, three rebounds and one assist, while Huey tallied two points, three rebounds and one assist, and Valdez finished with two points and one assist. Parker added one point, three rebounds and one steal, while Elizondo tallied one rebound and Champion finished with one steal in the contest.

The Lady Cats hosted the Denver City Fillies on Friday for their second meeting of the season. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a home game against Friona.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
