COACH HERRERA CONTINUES TO BUILD GIRLS’ PROGRAM AT AMHERST

The Amherst Lady Bulldogs’ varsity basketball team is Coached by Roberto Herrera, who is into his second year in charge of the Girl’s Athletic Program.

He is assisted again this year by Coach Thomas Light, who is into his fourth year of helping with girls Junior High Program.

Coach Herrera said that his team is TOUGH.

“When you have a total of six players; practices, drills, and games are challenging,” he said. “It takes, commitment and tenacity to practice and play. We are always the underdog in everything we do.”

The Lady Bulldogs’ squad this year includes junior, Nancy Rubio, sophomores, Maricella Gonzalez and Dennys Reyes, and freshmen, Journey Baker, America Pacheco and Neveah Esquibel.

“In a group of six players, we have two returning starters from last year, in Maricella Gonzalez and Dennys Reyes. My sophomores are my veterans this year,” Coach Herrera said. “For us the most important thing is showing up, ‘sixth man’ is for real.”

He added, “I feel that all of my players are key contributors, it takes all of us to contribute, it goes with our offensive and defensive philosophies.”

Coach Herrera talked about what he feels their strength is, saying TEAM is crucial.”

He added, some things we need to work on are that we lack confidence and experience. We need lots of playing time. With six players, you can’t go live until game day.” The Lady Bulldogs remaining schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, Jan. 18 th at Cotton Center; Friday, Jan. 21 st at Lazbuddie; Tuesday, Jan. 25 th home against Hart; Friday, Jan. 28 th home against Anton; Tuesday, Feb. 1 st Home against Kress; Tuesday, Feb. 8 th at Springlake-Earth; Friday, Feb. 11 th home against Cotton Center and Tuesday, Feb. 15 th home against Lazbuddie.
