The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team suffered their first district loss of the season on Friday at home, as they fell to the Brownfield Lady Cubs, 58-20.
With the loss, they fall to 15-8 overall, 3-1 in district play.
Gabi Fields buried a three from the right elbow to open the contest for Brownfield, and Deja Johnson dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Lindsey Herrera, drawing an and-one foul on Mahalia Huey. She missed the free throw, leaving the score, 5-0, with 3:44 remaining in the opening quarter.
Herrera picked up a steal and got it ahead to Ashley Ramirez, who dropped in the fast-break lay-up, stretching the lead to 7-0. With 2:36 remaining in the first quarter, Tia Johnson was fouled on an attempt by Ashtyn Parker. She split the free throws, making the score, 8-0.
Herrera passed the ball inside to Tia Johnson, who was fouled on an attempt by Madison McNeese. She split the free throws, pushing the lead to, 9-0, with two minutes remaining in the quarter.
The score would stand with Brownfield in front, 9-0, as the first quarter came to a close.
Deja Johnson opened the second quarter with a lay-up off of the assist from Dabria Blackwell, pushing their lead to double-digits, 11-0. McNeese got the Lady Cats on the board with a put-back off of her own miss, but on the other end, Deja Johnson was fouled on an attempt by McNeese. She converted both free throws, making the score, 13-2.
Deja Johnson dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Dabria Blackwell and on their next possession, Fields was fouled on an attempt by Emily Champion. She converted both free throws to stretch their lead to, 17-2, with 3:22 remaining in the first half.
With just under three minutes remaining in the half, Dabria Blackwell picked up a steal and tossed the outlet pass ahead to Fields, who was fouled on an attempt by Kennadi Hanlin. She knocked down both free throws, as Littlefield took a time out, trailing the Lady Cubs, 19-2. Hanlin drove the right side of the basket for a lay-up to end the scoring drought for Littlefield, but on the other end, Dabria Blackwell split a pair of free throws to extend their lead to, 20-4.
With under two minutes remaining in the game, ShyLa Blackwell was fouled on an attempt by Jasmine Barios; she sank both free throws to make the score, 22-4, going into the locker room at halftime.
Out of the break, McNeese picked up a steal and took it to the hoop for a fast-break layup, but Fields answered with a lay-up in transition to push the lead back out to, 24-6, with 7:32 left to play in the third quarter. Fields took a charge on Parker and the Lady Cubs took advantage of the turnover, as Tia Johnson dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Deja Johnson to make the score, 26-6.
Huey scored on a put-back for Littlefield, but on the other end, Tia Johnson dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Deja Johnson, drawing an andone foul on Huey. She converted the free throw to make the score, 29-8, with 6:22 left to play in the quarter. Amiah Elizondo drained a three from the right wing, off of the assist from Arianna Cruz, but Fields answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Herrera to make the score, 31-11.
With 4:26 left to play in the quarter, Cruz knocked down a three from the right elbow for Littlefield and on their next possession, she saved a ball from going out of bounds, as Head Coach Teddy Duncan quickly called a time out to prevent a turnover with 4:04 remaining in the quarter. Out of the break, Tia Johnson scored a lay-up off of the touch pass from Fields to extend their lead to, 33-14.
With just over three minutes remaining in the quarter, Fields picked up a steal from Hanlin in their own end and took it to the hoop for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Hanlin. She missed the free throw, leaving the score, 35-14. Fields followed it up with a three from the top of the key off of the assist from Blackwell and Herrera kept the rally going with a steal for a fast-break lay-up, pushing their lead to, 40-14.
Herrera was fouled on the floor by Cruz and made both shots on the one-in-one opportunity to send the Lady Cubs into the fourth quarter in front of Littlefield, 42-14.
Brownfield’s defense forced a 10-second call to open the fourth quarter, but on the next play, Hanlin was fouled on an attempt by Rhianna Miranda. She split the free throws to trim the lead to, 42-15, but on the other end, Fields was fouled on the floor by Hanlin, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She converted both free throws to push their lead back out to, 44-15.
Tia Johnson knocked down a pair of free throws and Shy’La Blackwell followed it up with a three from the left elbow to push their lead out to, 49-15. With 3:44 remaining, Deja Johnson converted a free throw to cap off a three-point play, and Dabria Blackwell dropped in a lay-up with 3:12 left to play, making the score, 54-14.
McNeese knocked down a three to stop the bleeding for Littlefield, but Herrera knocked down a jumper from the right elbow and Fields followed it up with a lay-up to make the score, 58-18, with just over one minute to play in the game. Solis was fouled on the floor by Fields, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She converted both free throws, as the Lady Cats fell to Brownfield, 58-20.
McNeese tallied seven points, two rebounds and two assists, while Cruz chipped in three points, two rebounds and one assist, Hanlin contributed three points, one rebound and one steal and Elizondo tallied three points.
Huey chipped in two points, three rebounds and four steals and Solis contributed two points and one rebound. Gau added nine rebounds, one assist and one steal, while Parker and Barios each tallied one assist.
The Lady Cats were at Friona on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will begin the second half of district play on Friday when they host Lamesa.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
