To the Patrons of Littlefield ISD:
Fall is in the air! With cooler temperatures rolling in, it looks like it is time to go over our bad weather protocols. These protocols are what we do in case we have to make any decisions about altering our school day schedule because of the weather. I don’t foresee using these protocols in the next couple of days, but I wanted everyone to be familiar with our processes.
I will always try to make the decision regarding cancelling or delaying school as early as I can on the affected morning, and then we will get the word out to everyone. We will communicate any school closure through our normal communications methods – phone message, email message, social media, the district website, KZZN, and local media — Channel 11, 13, and 28. Please remember, if you do not hear from me, we are business as usual.
In reference to our daily bus routes and inclement weather, parents need to be aware that, especially during the morning routes, we could be facing cold weather and bad road conditions. In the event our drivers are slowed by road conditions, please make sure your kids are not waiting too long outside for the buses to arrive. We will do our best to be on time, but the kids could possibly be in temperatures that are not conducive for them to be outside, so please plan accordingly. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Our Elementary and Junior High campuses observed “Open House” on Tuesday, October 12. Kudos to Tom Whistler and his Elementary staff along with Adam Solis and his Junior High staff on the job they do each day educating our kiddos!
Germ Blast came in last weekend and cleaned and sanitized our buildings. As I have stated earlier, Littlefield Independent School District will take every proactive approach to keep our students, staff and patrons safe.
The Wildcat Band will be performing on Saturday, October 16 at 5:15 at Plains Capital Field, formally known as “Lowery Field.” This is an advancing year for our Band, so GOOD LUCK TO MS. A, MS. MUELA, AND MS. COOK AND THE WILDCAT BAND!
Congratulations to the Wildcat Cross Country team on their outstanding showing at the District meet. Kudos to BREANNA ACEVEDO and OMAR MARTINEZ on qualifying for the Regional Cross Country Meet which will be on Monday, October 25 at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock, Texas. GOOD LUCK AT REGIONAL!
This is an update from our FFA teacher, Cody Spies:
Currently, the FFA and Ag. Classes are running full speed ahead, both in and out of the classroom. Not only do we have students in the classroom working diligently on their classwork, we also have several students showing off their skill through their Ag. Mechanics projects in preparation for the Area Show. Along with our projects, we are also preparing for our multiple contests and events including, attending FFA Greenhand camp, training over 45 student participants for over nine different LDE contests, training their Livestock Projects, and attending trainings for their Industrial Based Certifications in Feed lot Repair and Maintenance through the Texas Cattle Feeders Association.
As for the first couple of months of school, our student involvement has been exceptionally high. We brought 19 freshmen into attendance at the Area 1 FFA Greenhand camp at West Texas A&M. At this camp, our students not only learned skills necessary to being a good and influential FFA member, but also received the opportunity to meet many of their fellow FFA peers from across the Panhandle, 15-20 different cooperative sponsors of the Area 1 FFA, and several facility members from: West Texas A&M, Texas Tech University, Angelo State University, South Plains College, Frank Phillips College, and Clarendon College. This experience gave many of our freshman members the ability to make connections in which will help them in their future endeavors in whatever path they choose to take after high school.
Throughout these busy times we had the opportunity to attend our Littlefield District Fall Meeting, where we watched one of our own students represent both our chapter and school as a member of the acting District Officer team. Ian Cozart led our 8-chapter members and over 250 Littlefield District FFA attendees from across the district through leadership training activities gaining valuable experience as a leader and mentor for the FFA members in our area. In between this time, we also have seven students working on their Industrial Based Certification in Feedlot Repair and Maintenance through the Texas Cattle Feeder Association. During this training, students have the opportunity to become certified in driving a payloader and skid-steer loader, lock out and tag out safety on electrical boxes, safety harness training, and feed mill training. These seven students will complete their training the first week of November when they head to West Texas A&M and take a final Welding Certification Test, Bent Test, Lock Out Tag Out Test, Comprehensive Final, and a Mock Job Interview with a manager from Prefer, Gebo, Cactus Feeders, and professors from Texas Tech and West Texas A&M animal science Departments.
Involvement with SAE are very important to our FFA chapter. This year we have over 60 livestock projects on feed with students ranging from 3-12th grade. These projects range from Heifer, Swine Projects, Goat, and Sheep. These students have gotten off to a great start by already showing their project at the West Texas State Fair, South Plain Fair, and the Permian Basin. I look forward to what this year has to bring as they move forward with their Livestock Project. Our Chapter also has many shop students that are planning and starting their Ag. Mechanics project, many of these students have almost completed or have completed the plans for these projects and will start building them in the coming week. Good Luck to our student athletes in football and volleyball as they compete for LISD!
