The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team dropped a heart-breaker for Homecoming last Friday, falling to the Vega Longhorns, 35-32.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 1-3 overall on the year.
In the opening quarter, Kyler Edwards scored from two-yards out, but the Hornets missed on the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 6-0. Sudan would close out the first quarter, as Miled Ledbetter caught a 54-yard touchdown pass from Haden Provence. But again, the Hornets would miss on the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 12-0.
Neither team would score in the second frame, as the Hornets took a twoscore lead into the locker room at halftime.
Vega would respond to open the second half, as they struck with a 47-yard touchdown pass and a 28yard rushing touchdown. Both PAT’s were good, as they took a, 14-12, lead into the final quarter of play.
Edwards got the scoring going in the fourth quarter with a seven-yard rushing touchdown, but they failed on the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 18-14. Vega would score on back-to-back long passing plays to reclaim the lead, 28-18, but Sudan would not back down, as Edwards caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Haden Provence to cut the lead to, 28-24, after the missed two-point conversion.
Vega would strike again through the air on a 60yard touchdown pass, making the score, 35-34, after the PAT. Sudan would score on a six-yard touchdown run by Edwards late in the fourth quarter, and he converted the two-point conversion, but the Hornets came up just short, 35-32.
The Hornets totaled 403 yards of offense, including 290 rushing yards and 113 passing yards.
Offensively, Haden Provence finished the game 5-15 passing for 113 yards, two touchdown and two interceptions, while also added 17 carries for 145 yards on the ground.
Edwards carried the ball 19 times for 99 yards and three scores to lead the rushing attack, while Brian Delgado added eight carries for 35 yards.
In the receiving game, Ledbetter tallied two catches for 59 yards and a score, while Edwards added two catches for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Reno Smith let the team in tackles with 13, including three for loss, and one sack. Dylan Provence had seven tackles, including three for loss, one sack and an interception, while Brian Delgado chipped in eight tackles, two for loss, and Aiden Flores contributed eight tackles, three for loss and one sack.
Kyler Edwards chipped in four tackles, one for loss and two sacks, while Luis Vargas tallied five tackles, one for loss, and one sack and Bryan Jasso added six assists and two sacks. Ledbetter also hauled in an interception.
