Mustang baseball takes down Abernathy, 8-6, to close out regular season

The Olton Mustang’s varsity baseball team closed out the regular season on Tuesday with an, 8-6, victory over Abernathy on the road.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 7-13-1 overall, 4-6 in district play.

Jett Tomsu started on the mound for the Mustangs, giving up four hits, three walks and six runs, three earned, while striking out three batters. Dax Light pitched two innings, giving up three hits and one walk, while striking out one batter and Paytn Jimenez pitching one inning, giving up one walk and earning one strike out.

In the top of the first inning, Callen Burns drew a lead-off walk and stole second on a pitch, before Jimenez drew a walk to give Olton a pair of base runners. Tomsu doubled on a fly ball to right field, as Callen Burns scored and Jimenez was held up at third, making the score, 10.

Cesar Ceballos struck out swinging for out number one, but RJ Chavira singled on a fly ball to left field, as two runs scored to extend their lead to, 3- 0. Casi Villarreal came on as the courtesy runner for the catcher, before Rigo Galvan struck out looking for out number two. Villarreal stole third and scored on a wild pitch, before Wyatt Francis struck out swinging to retire the side.

In the home-half of the first, Tomsu got Schaap to strike out looking for out number one. Bird singled up the middle and stole second on a pitch, before Martinez hit a sacrifice grounder to Jimenez at shortstop, who got the out at first, as Bird advanced to third with two outs. Tomsu would get Hillis to pop up to Light at second base to end the inning.

The Mustangs went three-up-and-three-down in the top of the second inning, and in the bottom half Martinez drew a lead-off walk, before Harkey popped up to Light at second base for out number one, and Gonzalez grounded out to Light at second base for out number two. Spear singled on a fly ball to right field, as Martinez scored from second to trim the lead to, 4-1.

Spear took second on a wild pitch, but on the next play, he was picked off at third by Chavira, as Ceballos slapped the tag on him at third base to end the inning.

In the top of the third, Jimenez was thrown out at first on a dropped third strike, but Tomsu and Ceballos drew back-to-back walks to give the Mustangs a pair of base runners. With runners on second and third, Chavira singled to center field, driving in two runs to stretch the Olton lead to, 6-1.

Villarreal was picked off at first by the pitcher for out number two, before Galvan drew a walk to give the Mustangs a runner. Francis, though, would fly out to Gonzalez in left field to retire the side.

In the bottom half of the inning, Tomsu got Stattord to go down swinging, before Schaap drew a walk and Bird was hit by a pitch. Martinez singled through the right side to score two runs, trimming the lead to, 6-3, but Tomsu would bounce back, as he got Hillis to go down swinging for out number two. Martinez singled on an error by Jimenez as another run scored to cut the lead to, 6-4. Harkey, though, would ground out to Ceballos to end the inning.

Light drew a lead-off walk to begin the fourth inning, but Rylan Holmes struck out swinging for out number one. Light stole second on a passed ball, before Callen Burns struck out swinging for out number two. Light stole third on a pitch, before Jimenez walked to put runners on the corners for Olton.

Tomsu popped up to the pitcher and reached on an error, as Light scored and Jimenez advanced to second, making the score, 7-4. Ceballos popped up to shortstop, as the ball fell in for a hit, as Jimenez scored and Tomsu advanced to second, making the score, 8- 4. Chavira, though, would strike out looking to retire the side.

In the home-half of the fourth inning, Gonzalez flew out to Colby Burns in center field for out number one, and Spear popped up to Light at second base for out number two. Ortiz drew a walk and Schaap hit a fly ball to Galvan in right field and reached on an error, as Ortiz advanced to third on the play. Schaap stole second on a pitch and a balk by Tomsu scored Ortiz and put Schaap on third, as Abernathy trimmed the lead to, 8-5. Bird ripped a triple to right field, as Schaap scored to cut the lead to, 8-6.

Martinez would line out to Francis at first base to end the inning.

The score would stand over the final three innings, as Olton took the contest, 8- 6, on the road over Abernathy.
