Hornets come up short against Abernathy, 8-4

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity baseball team fell on the road to Abernathy on Tuesday, 8-4, in game one of their season series.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 1-3 in district play.

Haden Provence pitched three innings for the Hornets, giving up three hits, four walks and five runs, four earned, while striking out five batters. Caleb Groetken pitched 2.2 innings, giving up one hit, six walks and three runs, while earning six strikeouts, and Kyler Edwards pitching 0.1 innings, earning one strikeout.

Each team plated a run in the first inning and the score stood, 1-1, until the bottom of the third when Abernathy tacked on four runs to push their lead to, 5-1. Sudan would add a run in the top of the fifth and two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to, 5-4, but Abernathy would an-swer with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, before holding Sudan scoreless in the top of the seventh to take the contest, 8-4.

The Hornets totaled seven hits and six walks at the plate, led by Dylan Provence, who tallied two hits, including a double, one walk and two RBI’s. Rylan Willoughby added a double, while Haden Provence contributed a hit, two walks and an RBI.

Kaine Carroll, Groetken and Miles Ledbetter each recorded a hit, while Edwards drew two walks and Jason Bohler drew one walk in the contest.

The Hornets hosted Abernathy on Saturday as district play continued. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a home game against Olton.

First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
